Anyone have experience rebuilding batteries for the PowerBook 1400? I want to get into mine to check for battery leakage but I don't know the best way to get the battery casing open. |

Ah, thanks! I found that video in my brief searching and he doesn't go over where the snaps and such that need to be disengaged are. It did give me a good idea of where to start in taking it apart though.

Typically battery packs are sealed units and they need to be cut open. At least I have never encountered on that pops or snaps apart. I generally used a blade on a Dremel Tool. And when you are done you glue it all back together.

Ok, thanks for the info! That helps quite a bit, as now I know what to look for. I don't have a Dremel, sadly. I do have a few utility knives and a putty knife though.

Got the battery disassembled with a utility knife and someone with a steadier hand than mine. Sadly it is leaking. Not very much though, thankfully.

I attempted this once a number of years ago. Used a very thin hacksaw along with a vise to hold the battery still enough to cut it open. Sadly, the one I chose was a disgusting mass of leaked cells inside - a real wreck. Instead of rebuilding, I just glued the casing back together and used it as a weight-saver - the 1400 it came from was plugged in most of the time anyway.
