Hello, I am running System 7.6.1 on an SE/30 and, in the Finder have multiple files with "Last Modified" dates in the early 1920's. Any suggestions how to correct this? Thank you. |

It can be corrected using something like Norton Disk Doctor, which can correct any bad Modified or Creation dates. Make sure to fix the system clock before running. Feel free to disable everything except the file checks in the Norton preferences.

This is an interesting topic. I recently got handed an old LC III which still had tons of data on it. But since the PRAM battery died a long time ago (it was still the original, luckily not exploded!) all the dates were 1920ish too. I've since backuped the content on my 8600 but didn't have the time to check for a good solution. So Disk Doctor from the Norton Utilities package should do the trick? Think I'll have to give it a spin this weekend. @Tugboat - welcome to the System 7 Today forums! *wave*

So I just gave Norton Disk Doctor a try as suggested by lilliputian. I used version 4.0.4 as obtained from the Mac Garden. You probably need a slightly older version (3.x?) for your 68k Mac, @Tugboat. You can run it directly from the mounted image, no need to install or burn a disc. Here's the culprit with the 1920s dates I tried to fix: http://images.macintosh.garden/2021/10/16/wrong-modifieds.jpg I started the general test but skipped checking for media, partitions and directories. I'm using a SCSI2SD v6 in my 8600 and it'll throw up false errors anyway. So after a while going through my files it brought up the "wrong creation date" / "wrong modification date" dialog as seen here: http://images.macintosh.garden/2021/10/16/bad-creation.jpg So I just picked the file I would like to have fixed and hit the respective button. Done. Now this was the result: http://images.macintosh.garden/2021/10/16/file-after.jpg As you can see, it did not restore the original dates that are lost. But the timestamp is now current and "back on track" for the future. All in all, the solution using Norton Disk Utilities works :-) However, it's a solution that could be much simpler. I wonder if anyone ever ran into a dedicated shareware/freeware tool that does just that without all the other stuff Norton DU does?

Yep, I've also had trouble with flat battery dates. But setting the created date to 'now' is not ideal either. Annoyingly, this can sometimes happen when transferring files between platforms. Accurate created dates can be helpful in some scenarios of version control, other times it's just interesting to reveal how long you've worked on something! Utilities such as FileTyper, File Buddy and MacDater allow you to change the created and modified dates to whatever you want.รถ

Thank you for the tutorial on Norton Disk Doctor, that was just as good as the tutorial on MacNFS.

I have just uploaded File Date Fixer to Macintosh Garden (http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/file-date-fixer). It is for PowerPC only unfortunately, but according to the ReadMe it should work on System 7 with Appearance Manager installed.

Thanks, mrdav! What a great little utility, from the looks of it. Re: NDD, I usually set it to "Fix Automatically" in the preferences, that way you don't get any annoying pop-ups during the scan. NDD also has the ability to fix broken icons by adjusting their "bundle bit" status to either On or Off, though I believe that that can also be accomplished using Save a BNDL I believe it's called. And it also will detect broken/corrupt resource forks, though it can't actually fix those.
