So, sitting alongside my Power Macintosh 8600 is my old Mac SE now. I've been looking into networking both of them as it makes life a lot easier exchanging files. Unfortunately, The old lady (SE) doesn't have a network card and I haven't won the lottery yet to afford one. So I'm looking into cheaper solutions. Top-speed isn't an issue. I've found two old PhoneNET adapters in the basement that I had gotten some years ago. For those who don't know, PhoneNET was a cheap networking solution by Farallon Computing which basically used usual telephone cables instead of more expensive LocalTalk cables. It's slow (only up to 20kb/s) but supposedly easy to setup. So here's my adventure so far: - I've got a working (tested) phone cable and both adapters. - I've plugged the adapter into the printer port of the SE and 8600 (yes, they go to the printer port, not the modem port) - Both have AppleTalk set in the Network control panel & Chooser - FileSharing on the 8600 is turned on and running - On the SE, I cannot see anything in Chooser. Neither when using System 6.0.8 nor 7.5.3. I know they automatically update the list of services available on the network. Does anyone remember how these ones are supposed to work? I'm obviously missing a step or something. |

Never tried with PhoneNET adapters as i have a din8 printer cable. But , after setting AppleTalk and Sharing setup on in their respective control panels, I think the volumes or folder must be shared too. For that select , say the HD and in menu file -> sharing and set the sharing as you want in the window... Or nothing would show in the chooser . Anyway, that's what works for me. I think mk558's site talk about PhoneNET, maybe there is something different in the setup... http://www.applefool.com/se30/

I have never used phone net, however if all you want to do is connect one classic mac to another all you need to do is connect their serial ports via a standard serial cable and turn on Apple Talk and the machines will see each other and talk to each other just fine.

Thanks for the link, galgot. It took some searching but I eventually landed on the PhoneNet manual through the page. I think my problem might be related to a missing termination. I've found basically three different responses in regards to PhoneNet networks: 1.) They don't need termination if only two Macs are connect with one another, they will work fine. 2.) They will work fine without termination, but not as reliable as with. 3.) They will not work at all without termination. After reading the manual (which covers the topic of termination) I'm inclined to believe the 3rd and give that one a try. Going to find a 120 Ohm resistor now and crimp it onto the end of a telephone cable. Will report back :-) Thank you two for trying to help!

Got it to work! Found a 130 Ohm resistor and crimped it a phone plug. Terminating both ends properly brought it to life now. Now shoveling files from the 8600 running 7.6.1 to the SE running 7.1. It's not exactly speedy but not as bad as I thought. Totally fine for the ocassional disk image or MacPaint file. So in case anyone else runs into this problem - terminate your PhoneNET connectors! :-)
