Sounds nice. I remember when I was in high school we had a few 240mhz (or something like that) 5500s in the graphic arts class and the teacher, somehow, managed to get these things to run OS9, Photoshop 6, Illustrator 9 and he also had network ass-istant on them. Those things were slow with all that software but they got the job done and were rock solid in doing so. If I had more desk space I'd be more than glad to buy the 5400 in the classifieds just for the memories.

I know that these software titles were within spec but that doesn't change the fact that they were rather slow. The difference between a 603e and a G3 is really amazing because my PowerBook G3 (of the similar vintage as the 5500) which has only 10mhz more clockspeed runs Photoshop 6 and OS9 like it was meant for them. I can only imagine what running a 400mhz 5500 is like though, that must be godly.

Yes, G3s are noteably fater than 603s and 604s at a similar clock speed. The G3 is really just a 603 with backside cache, a lot of it, and a redesigned system of accessing it. http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/cpu/ppc-2.ars

If you haven't already done it, make sure you upgrade the hard drive too. Popping a 6GB, 7200RPM drive into my Performa 6360 sped the thing up so much that I no felt the need for a processor upgrade. I can only image what the HD plus processor upgrade would feel like. JoAT
