I'm a MAC person from way back, mostly because I get hand-me-downs from my brother. It all started with his SE! Now my DH and I use an iMac G5 and an iBook, but we want to start using two PowerBook 5300s (one CE, one CS) and network them to our iMac. Can this be done wirelessly? If not, what connecting cords do I need. Can I use an USB adapter on the PBs? One runs 8.1, the other 7.6.1. I know this information has probably been addressed before, so if anyone can point me to the proper discussion I'd appreciate it. Oh, we also have a Bondi iMac that won't boot and a Power Computing clone (that also runs 7.6.1). What fun things can I do with the PBs? They are in such good shape that I hate having them go to waste! Thanks, all. HK |

[quote="Holly K" Can this be done wirelessly? If not, what connecting cords do I need.[/quote] This powerbook has pcmcia slots. It should be capable of running a wifi card with a lucent ORiNOCO chip set. These were released under many different names. There is an article mainly referencing PB 1400's but applicable here: http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/mac/2003/09/05/cheap_powerbook.html There are two sets of drivers: WaveLan - available on this site and good for OS 8.1 and 7.6 (not sure on 7.5). There are also ORiNOCO drivers good for 8.6 and up. You have a dilemma here. 8.6 gets you into Classilla, a better browser, and ORiNOCO software with is newer and better, easier to configure, but requires 64Mb RAM, but 7.6 is sooo much faster and cleaner. This would be the best way to network, via your wireless router. Alternately, if you have another machine that runs an OS prior to OS X, and has both ethernet and the printer/modem port, you can set this machine up with the software Local-Talk Bridge(download from Apple). This will allow you to bridge between and AppleTalk network running TCP/IP and a standard Ethernet network running TCP/IP. Quote from: "Holly K" Can I use an USB adapter on the PBs? I am not sure if the USB cards for this will run or if there are drivers. Maybe someone else can chime in for this. Quote from: "Holly K"
First, once you get some connection, go through all of the software updates available from this site. They will make the machines as speedy as possible. Then, you will find software here for word processing, email, web browsing, games and on and on. Explore the site. I have found it an endless source of information and entertainment for my older machines. Another tip, if you can find the right adaptor (Flash to PCMCIA), you can use a compact flash card to give you a second hard drive. the last adaptor I bought would only read from 8.6 up. I do not know if this is n adaptor limitation or an OS limitation. But it does give you a way for getting a larger storage device onto the machine without opening it up. Have fun.

Hello, there was a post about an interesting adapter recently at emaculation.com : http://www.jagshouse.com/PlusToiMac.html. May be this would work for you too, if there is only few hardware available for the PB internal expansion slot. If your are through with the software at this site, there will be lots of games and apps available at macintoshgarden.org that will suit your PB's. About your bondi iMac: Did you try CUDA reset already? Best wishes!
