Hello, I'm writing this from a power mac 8600/300, and this website has been really helpful getting up and running. I'm currently working on the printer sharing with OS X (10.4). WHen I double click on 'desktop printer utility' in the 'apple laser writer folder' in apple extras I get a blip about how it will not run without 'desktop printer extension, you may need to reenable it from Extensions Manager contro panel or reinstall it.' I've checked that it's enabled and I've reinstalled the laserwriter 8.6 software. I'm running 7.6.1, I've installed open transport from the updates on this site. However, the laserwriter 8.6 software came from Apple's website; I could not find the laserwriter 8.6update on system7today. Just wondering if you have any ideas. Sincerely, Dan |

Apple LaserWriter Software is still downloadable from Apple. It is available in several different versions. bill

Hey Bill, thanks for the response, sorry I meant to say that while I did find laser writer8.6 on apple's website, after installation of the software, I'm having trouble setting it laserwriter 8 as the desktop printer. The error I got is in my original post. (I was sure to download laserwriter 8.6, and not 8.6.1) -Dan

Hi guys, I tried the laser writer 8.6 installer linked on system7today's website and I'm still getting the same error: "cannot run without desktop printer extension, either enable it or reinstall it." I've tried everything I can think of, from reinstalling the desktop printing extension, reinstalling the laser writer 8.6 software, going into extensions manager control panel for enabling, disabling, re-enabling, restarting the OS, etc. Note: I have gotten OS 7.6.1 and OS X file sharing to work and have installed all updates. Do you guys have any ideas what could be the problem? Sincerely, Dan Lynch

Desktop Printing has three parts, Desktop Printer Extension, Desktop Printer Spooler, and Desktop PrintMonitor. Make sure you have all three. If you do, then you probably have to put yourself through the arduous process known as extension conflict troubleshooting. You can read more about it here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2976
