I have these files that I think I got from Apple, but I went through a lot of sites looking for them so I'm not sure: System_7.5.3_01of19.smi.bin System_7.5.3_02of19.part.bin System_7.5.3_03of19.part.bin . . . System_7.5.3_19of19.part.bin What are they? Do I need to somehow combine them and burn them to a CD? Do I need StuffIt to do this? Can I prep this on an iMac, and then install to an LC? Or am I better off installing this to an emulator? My old Macs (Original 128k, LC, Portable II, IIfx) are all long gone, so I am at a loss for what to do with these files. |

They are unfortunately floppy disk images. Apple expects you to have access to a Mac with Mac OS 9 or lower and a built-in floppy drive to use those. You're supposed to make 19 physical floppy disks with those. They don't work in Mac OS X... or with USB floppy drives. An iMac will be useless in this situation.

The images can be burned to a CD as separate images and ran from there. They can also be copied to a hard drive and ran from there. As well as being used from a floppy drive. Unless the images are on floppies, they all need to be together on the same media and in the same directory. The first image is a self mounting image. Once it is mounted, you can run the installer which will automatically use the other images in the set and install System 7.5.3. In most regards this is still not all that helpful, since you still need some method to boot the computer you wish to install the OS on. These images will work to install on an emulator assuming of course that the emulator you are using supports System 7.5.3. It is unfortunate that none of the images in the set create a bootable floppy disk. However the same site that contains these images also contains a Network access floppy image which is bootable. This of course still requires that one create a real floppy in order to boot an older Mac, however the Network access floppy can be used as a bootable floppy with emulators supporting System 7.5.3. bill
