SheepShaver started its life as a runtime environment for the Mac OS under the PPC flavor of BeOS. Since that time it has morphed into a full blown emulator. It runs on Linux, Windows and MacOS X.

When emulating a Mac OS prior to OS 8 it is necessary to add a Mac ROM file, which is included as part of the Mac OS beginning with OS 8. It is my understanding that the earliest Mac OS supported by SheepShaver is System 7.5.2.

System 7.5.3 can be downloaded from here. The update to System 7.5.5 can also be downloaded from the same site. You are on your own as far as finding the Mac ROM file.

The System7Today site is focused on using Mac OS 7.6 on real hardware and information here will be mostly anecdotal regarding emulation. The SheepShaver project pages can be found here and will probably lead to more concrete and useful information in installing and using SheepShaver.

It doesn't matter what version of System 7 you have they can all connect to the internet.

Your troubles probably lay with not having internet software installed, as System 7 does not actually come with stuff like a web browser.

The state of classic Mac emulation is pretty pathetic I'd recommend getting an actual machine... they're only like $5 - $20 on eBay for a good System 7 machine.

Hey, I guess I'm two months too late, but I just wanted to point out that getting online within SheepShaver is very easy, although it isn't really documented properly.

It works the same as in Basilisk II (which might be a better emulator for System 7).  In the network tab of the Sheepshaver GUI select "Basilisk II Router" to enable SheepShaver to share your internet connection.  And then set it up within System 7.

There are some instructions for what settings to configure over here:

That uses screenshots from Basilisk II, but the process is exactly the same.
