Hey guys, I just got one, and it is a beast. It has been heaviliy upgraded. The 604 has been replaced with a NewerTech G3 at 336mhz, according to ASP. I also got 2 boxes for such upgrades, with the original processors inside. The RAM has been pushed to 224mb. There is what I assume to be the stock 2gb HD as the primary drive, and a huge 20gb in there as secondary. It has a 10/100 Apple branded ethernet PCI card, and has Mac OS 9.1 and the Appleshare Server software loaded. I want to convert this into a very, VERY fast system 7 machine. I put in my System 7.6 CD, and it booted right up. My 15" studio LCD even worked, as did the ADB keyboard and mouse plugged into it, which is funny because according to mactracker, this display "requires" 8.0 to work. Anyways, I normally would not have any problems installing, but for some reason the hard drives will not format. I went to the special menu, and it says the drives are locked. I tried disk first aid, drive setup, and Apple HD SC setup, all the apps in the utilities folder. So, can anyone help me get 7.6 on this rocket? It's no G3 or G4 upgraded 9600, but it's almost as good, and will run circles around my Powerbook 1400c 133mhz machine with 40mb running 7.6.1. thanks. |

Alright, I managed to get them formatted after booting in to 9.1 and fiddling in some control panels. 7.6 is installed, I have yet to put 7.6.1 on it, so I have been getting random type 11 errors. I installed apps off my Internet Connection Kit, fired up netscape 2.0, fought through the javascript errors, and installed iCab. I installed the nupower utilities off the floppy I had, not sure if it's the latest, but it works. For some reason, those apps say I have a 302mhz G3, and ASP in 7.6 says it's 195mhz, so I really have no clue. I also am going to install the ATI rage utilities, since I have a ATI PCI video card out of a B&W. It's not a rage 128, but the other one they used in the EDU market, the one with the mac video port and S-video in and out ports. Oh, and the PCI ethernet card is not working, what should I install to make it work? the built in 10 base works a treat, but I have seen a noticeable difference using 100 base. thanks.

Some of the accellerators will operate at different speeds depending on the structure of the particular machine. I think it is the bus speed in the machine itself that determines the maximum speed available in each case. the two have to work in concert with each other.

Also, for some accelerators, ASP will not report the correct speed. Sorry, meant to put that in the original post.

Ah ok, that makes sense. I know it's a server, but I don't think I will reinstall the appleshare stuff. I have been needing a good machine to sync my 2 newtons ( can one machine handle 2?), as well as load the quicktake software since I got a 150, and the stylewriter 2500 stuff. I do have a G3 AIO I was going to use, but it has power supply problems. BTW, I have my Powerbook 1400 loaded with 7.6.1 and I used it to sync with my eMate, but it stopped being able to export my newtonworks documents, something about needing a printer, so I did a brain wipe and lost my docs, but now I think I know what was wrong. It had to do with a setting in the Teacher Setup app IIRC. Unrelated, but I was wondering if anyone has any ideas. -digital
