Though I use a text editor for my writing tasks (I don't need to do much formatting), I know a lot of people prefer to use word processors. When I have to use one, for me nothing beats WriteNow. It is fast (very fast), has an uncluttered interface, and is very stable. If you write on an old Mac, especially older 68k ones, try to find a copy of it. It was developed up to version 4. I use version 3 as it seems even faster and stabler.

Here's an excerpt from WriteNow's Wikipedia entry:

"WriteNow represented what many saw as an ideal Macintosh application. It had a simple, intuitive graphical user interface (GUI), no copy protection, and it worked in practically every revision of the Macintosh operating system, including OS 9 emulated in Classic mode under Mac OS X. Its biggest claim to fame, however, was its speed. It was written in assembly language (Motorola 680x0) by a group of developers who had a reputation for producing extremely efficient code."

I agree that Write Now is a great word processor for 68K Macs.  I've used every version from 2.2 to 4 on the IIfx; nothing beats it for speed.  Too bad they never (to my knowledge) ported it to the PPC.

I googled Write Now and found this site.  It appears pretty old, but this guy was making upgrades for the program.  So If you have Write now, it might be worth checking out.

Since I've always used rather powerful vintage Macs, I've been quite satisfied with AppleWorks 5.  Microsoft Word has always been my last choice on all system types.  In fact I don't even have it installed on my Mac Pro.  I've also never felt the need to use Write Now, because I don't really need the benefits it offers.

On Mac OS X I use TextEdit if I have to whip up a quick paper, or Pages if I have to do something really complex.  TextEdit, like Write now, is surprisingly well featured for such a fast (instantaneous launch) and tidy word processor.  Strangely, you have to enable all the features, as they are not by default.

Now a good question might by, what is the current release status of Write Now?  Has it been released as freeware?  If not, who currently owns it?

WriteNow was never ported to PowerPC. Since it was written in 68k assembly code, it would be a very time consuming port.
There was a port for the NeXT computers, but they also used 68k processors.

As for it's status, I think it's owned by The Learning Company, or something like that. The last versions, though, were made by T/Maker. AFAIK, it's not released as freeware.

I remember reading some usenet post by one of the main developers, talking about the history of the program. I've also seen current word processors' developers mention WriteNow as one of their software's influences. MarinerWrite comes to mind.

It really doesn't need to be ported. Compared to Word  for PPC, which I also have, WriteNow is extremely fast.
