I have a PPC 8500/120 AV upgraded with Railgun G3 275MHz running OS761. I want to connect the Sound output to Amplifier in my sitting room. However, my internet source, wireless router and G4 Quicksilver running OS9 or 10.3 and another PC are located at my working room about 15 feet (or about 5 meters) distance from the amplifier. I would like to use wireless connection. 1. Any freeware function like "PC-Anywhere" (in PC) that can "control" the PPC 8500 from my working room via 802.11b ? (802.11b fast enough ? My router support up to 802.11g only) 2. Can PPC 8500 be start up from this in-house LAN from working room (i.e. I don't need to go to the sitting room to turn on it physically) ? 3. Anyone tried installed PC version PCI card 802.11b or 802.11g working under OS761 ? Or we need to "flash" it to become Mac version ? Any suggestion ? 4. Any hints which software deliver the best sound quality under OS761 from this Audio output plug to the amplifier, or it is indifference no matter using what software ? I am now using Quicktime, MediaPlayer, Realplayer. Most likely, I will send the mp3 files from Quicksilver to PPC8500 to play. Thanks very much. |

Not that I know of off hand, but you might look into available solutions for waking your computer from sleep with network activity. Quote from: "cr2032" 3. Instead, you should acquire a wireless to ethernet bridge, often called a wireless "game adapter." Quote from: "cr2032" 4. Why on Earth would you want to use an old 8500 for that purpose? Especially with System 7.6? For a media PC, the 8500 and System 7.6 have got to be about the worst option available. I'd sooner use a PC with Linux or Windows for such a purpose. But to each their own. Anyway, Dan pretty much answered all of your questions. I don't recall any old world powermac supporting WOL ("Wake On LAN"). n.b. I'm not knocking 7.6, but in terms of media, it really shows its age. If I were going to use a computer for "media" purposes, I would want good video support as well. (So I could watch all of my downloaded porn on the television. ) And you'll never get that with System 7.6.

I use System 7 to play streaming audio from my Mac Pro to my home audio system all the time and it's just fine... In fact I was planning on writing a tutorial on how one could set up a rather nice home system using Nice Cast and At Ease so that you would only need a mouse.

Thanks Dan, I will try VNC soon and your advices. Why I use 8500 ? I just want to turn the old ppc as a useful one on nowaday. If system 7 can do the job, I will try on unless the sound quality is not acceptable. But I use soundjam on the speaker is ok. Not sure after going through amplifier. And now I need to source a wireless bridge, too.

Quote from: "dpaanlka" I use System 7 to play streaming audio from my Mac Pro to my home audio system all the time and it's just fine... I have my 1400c with a wi-fi card hooked up to my audio system, and I use SoundJam to listen to dozens of net radio stations and all my music. It works great. I even set up some keyboard shortcuts using KeyQuencer so I don't have to leave my text editor to change stations, pause, change volume etc. I agree that for video it's not a good choice, but for audio it works fine. In my case, it is the best setup because I don't have to leave the powerbook, and I pretty much don't watch any video off the net. The only alternative for me would be a notebook running some unix, where emacs would do everything I do now. It would probably work even better, but I would have to put a lot of time learning it and setting it up.
