I was wondering about the apple tv system or whatever it was called. What slot does it plug into? & wouldn't it not look that good in thousands or 256 colors since that was standard then? The info on Apple's site is a little unspecific, thanks! |

I used to have one of them there gizmos. If it's the same thing that I'm thinking of, it doesn't plug into any slot. In my old 5200 it attached via a ribbon cable. As for the technical details of the device and how it works, I cannot and will not help you. It's just something that I know nothing about and I have no interest in learning anything about it. I can tell you however, that it does work reasonably well. The picture quality was good on a 5200. I used my old 5200 pretty much exclusively as a television set until it gave up the ghost. I thought of it as an old TV set that took two or three minutes (The time it took to boot) to warm up.

Well I found that the apple tv/video system is 2 cards that you install in the computer... but I haven't found what slots they're supposed to be in... would the LC PDS slot be one of them possibly? thanks again!

It's a dedicated slot and the cards only work in certain Power Mac/Performas, including 5200, 5300, 5400, 5500, 6200, 6300, 6400, 6500 and the Quadra/LC/Performa 630 and I believe also the LC/Performa 580. The cable tuner doesn't have a slot at all - a dedicated cable plugs into it from the motherboard.

That is a good use for a 6200.

Another good use for a 6200 is as a doorstop. Seriously though, I have a TV tuner card in my 6360. Loved having that there when I lived alone in a small apartment. Plus it was nice to be able to watch TV in a window while surfing the web in a separate window. Tried routing my Nintendo 64 through there back in the day, but there is a delay between the video signal and being displayed on the screen which made it impossible to play on. (The delay is only a second or so, but long enough to screw with your video gaming...)

Too bad a lot of the compatible systems, the 5200, 5300, 6200, and 6300, are just plain awful computers in every regard other than the TV system. However, if you get a 6500 or something with the TV system, then its pretty sweet.

Yeah, but that's why I bought the 6360 back in the day. It has the 6200/6300 case and features, but it was built on the 6400 motherboard, which later became the 6500/TAM motherboard. Love that 6360.

Quote from: "JoAT" Yeah, but that's why I bought the 6360 back in the day. Exactly, not to be confused with 6300.

Your all so mean... hurting my performa's feelings! Just kidding... but I do love that machine to death, and with 48 mb of ram it's really not that bad as long as i'm not on the internet (which it just does ok on). I've never actually used a system 7 machine that wasn't considered a limited mac... LC II, powermac 5260/100, my performa. The only thing I would be worried about with the tv is the thousands of colors and the sound the fan makes.
