Hey guys, I have my little Classic I all set up on my desk next to my B&W G3 running tiger. I plan on using it as a simple IRC machine. I did have it fully decked out with 7.5.5, but that has since proved to be too much of a drag on the little old 68000.

So now, I loaded 6.0.8 on it, and it runs nice, boots VERY fast (34 seconds from a cold start!!), with 7.5.5 I had to wait about 4 minutes for everything to come up, and menus and such were slow to draw, requiring about 5 seconds each.

I would keep using 6.0.8, but I can't get it configured on the net for some reason. I am using a Asante EN/SC-10T, and the driver does install and run in 6.0.8, but I can't get MacTCP to work right. So I figure, go for a lower end System 7. I was thinking 7.0.1 with system tune up 3.0 installed, or System 7.1/7.1.1 (pro)

Anyone have an idea? Will the lower the version number be better, or is there something in 7.1 that makes it faster? I want speed, and stability. oh yeah, specs:

Motorola 68000 8mhz
4mb of RAM (max)
40mb HD
Asante EN/SC-10T adapter.
external apple branded FDHD with eject issues.

I would probably give 7.1.1 a try.  You'll find it to be much more responsive than 7.5.x.

Frankly, I'd never recommend 7.5.x on anything.  Everyone should stick to either 7.1.x or 7.6.x.

Perhaps what I should do is work my way up slowly, starting with 7.0.1, then 7.1, and then 7.1.1, and roll it back based on that.

I am curious why exactly it's illegal to download 7.1 and 7.1.1? 7.0.1 is free, as is 7.5.3 and 7.5.5. What about 7.6? or is it because apple has not gotten around to releasing 7.6 yet?

I think perceived usability is closely related to performance and for a Mac Classic the best performance will be available running System 6.0.x.

If you resolve issues with MacTCP, you should be able to use Telnet to open a shell on your OS X machine and use the shell for access to features on the internet. NiftyTelnet, the Communication module from ClarisWork 3 and other applications will give you telnet functions to access the Mac OS X machine.

Gamba's Site  provides useful information on getting System 6 online. Jag's House is also an excellent source of information on getting older systems connected and functional on the internet.

System 7.1 and Mac OS 7.6 have not been released by Apple and probably never will. Those systems contain items that were licensed by Apple and Apple does not have the rights to redistribute those items.

I agree with wove.   For an old Classic, System 6.0.8 is the way to go.   MacTCP is not difficult to figure out, but you do need to realize that it does not do DHCP.   So you'll have to configure your Classic with a static IP address.   Which, luckily, is very easy to do.
