All,

posting this from a 7600 I just obtained. Packed it full o RAM and a ATI rage card and she smokes. One interesting thing is, this computer's processor snaps in on a card (kinda looks like a PCI card). The processor card is actually from a big stack that the dealer had around and it shows up as a 200 MHz 604e, PowerMacintosh 8600 in system profiler (it came with OS 8.5). I haven't noticed any instability yet. Has anyone else come across this kind of thing ? Should I leave it in or go back to a slower card the guy sent with it (I think a 120 MHz card) ?

I had a nondescript 200 Mhz Apple 604 CPU in a 7300 for 6 months or so. I did not run to any problems. I used it with os's 7.6.1, 8.6, 9.1.

The 604e's, unlike  ev'es (aka "g2"), seems to be switchable between 7000/8000/9000's.

Did you install the ATI drivers from this site?

Many many Macs are like that.  If you buy Sonnet upgrades, thats how they come.

They're generally OK.  The processor that came with you system will be whatever the number is after the slash in the name.  There is no such thing as a 7600/120 as far as I know.

Also, the name of the system in system profiler is determined by a ROM simm card, which is removeable on that system I believe.  So in conclusion, that sounds like quite a hodge-podge of parts you have there.
