Quote from: "wall" Have anyone tested this in 761? It is meant for 8 & 9. I have noticed several posts covering Antivirus and anti-intrusion software for OS 7.6. I was curious if anyone has been having virus troubles or intrusion problems on their System 7 machines. When I was running 68K Mac hardware and earlier OSes, I generally had Disinfectant installed. As I recall there were a couple exploits that used Hyercard and perhaps other items as well. During that time I personally however never experienced any virii on my Macs. I stopped worrying about such matters at some point and never did get around to using any software of that nature for the MacOS. In point of fact I still do not use any of that software for Mac OS Classic or OS X. I guess I am somewhat curious if interest in this software come from experiencing this nature of problems with your Macs, or if you are noticing threats to your systems in Mac OS 7.6. If there are security threats out there for our old OS, then perhaps I should stop turning such a blind eye to it. bill

Like George Mallory said of climbing to the Mt. Everest: "Because it's there" From a more serious point of view, I do not want to spread viruses around. Not even those for Windows.I have got both mac and (mostly) Windows viruses, although my antivirus softwares have always worked fine and stopped those before problems in 8/9/X. I do want to keep it that way also in 761. When running 761 it is not a question would someone want to intrude into this OS, but would someone want to intrude into my computer. The situation do not change, just because I am running an OS from the Stone Age. I do have hardware firewall in my home/at work, but I also want to have a software one when using pb1400 on the road. So I am using IpNetSentry, which Dan found. MS Office 98, IE5 and Outlook all had severe security loopholes at one point of their lifecycle. There is no need to be paranoid, but not all the people everywhere are nice. Or honest. And do no harm.

yeah, in the past (1993) i got involved with some ne'er do wells and had passed most if not all virii that could affect System7. Norton was my only choice. these things ate disenfectant and worm eater. many of the early mac virii were in fact aimed at the hypercard stack and graphics documents via meta info. if you have norton look at the defs sometime, there are quite more than most people think. MacAddict unknowingly sold a 7dust variant around on one of their cds! i've even gotten much the same from a print house on floppies i provided for finished product, this strangely enough the day i had decided to turn nav off. whew. i cleaned the disks and called the print house advising them to get some protection and 2 days later installed nav on their 9600 server. not paraniod by any means. but it's true - a stitch in time saves 9. i have nav on my blue & white but auto scan is off. i use the old "trusted list" method knowing i can clean up.

I've never personally experienced any adverse effects from any classic Mac virus.
