ok i tried to create a boot cd and failed. my toast 4 manual gave 2 options. burn a mac volume ie my hard drive. or using the files and data option you hold down the shift control buttons as you drag a blessed system folder into the toast window. this all worked and burned but when i booted back up i get a sad mac 0000f. you can take the cd out and the machine booted fine. toast indicated that you had to have apple cd player mine is not it is a generic scsi cd drive i have booted from this cd drive using os install etc so it looks like i need to create a disk image to boot from. so i am thinking that I would need install 7.6.1 on to the image copy the utilities i need and burn the disk. what is everyones thoughts |

The sad Mac and the error code would seem to indicate a hardware problem. When a Mac tries to boot without a valid system folder, it flashes the folder icon. Most 3rd party CD drives will not work to boot a Mac. However I suspect that non Apple CD Drives from the Clone machines would be bootable. That seems an odd sad mac error. Generally they look something like this 0fXXXX. Those starting with "0f" are the most common and indicate a compatibility problem. That is most associated with bad memory, although non unique SCSI ids etc can generate a 0f as well. bill

I would go with wove's non apple cd-drive. You will find a free Apple Error Codes 1998 app from: http://download.nafura.it/home/mac/files.asp?cat=C97 I used its search and got: $000F Reserved for Macintosh compatibility There was alot more info of how to track problem etc, but basically the message was this.

http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drivedb/search.drivedb.lasso Here is a good database search for drive combatibility, but as you have been able to boot from an install disk (I missed this from your post the first time), maybe your drive is fine. Could you try a slightly different variation to check, like a copy of the OS cd, just to narrow down the culprit?
