Hi Guys, I'm in the UK and I've just bought a Powerbook 1400/166. I bought it primarily to run a music automtion program called 'Ultramix' (by Mackie). The computer came with OS B1-8.5. It also came with 16Mb RAM as standard, but I've just upgraded it to 48Mb. As OS 8.5 takes 11.9Mb, and that I don't need all the OS fancy stuff, what size is System 7 and would I notice a difference in terms of speed etc. between the two.? I should add that the Mackie Ultramix software works through an Opcode Studio 4 midi interface and that is accessed via the serial buss of the Powerbook. If I should 'downgrade' to system 7, where can I obtain it from (I have the CD-ROM and Floppy Disk Powerbook accessories). I note that the old user of this computer also has Microsoft Office on it.....can I somehow 'Ghost' these from the current drive if I downgrade, or can I downgrade the OS without losing stuff currently on the drive? I come from a PC background and this is the first Mac I've ever owned. Thanks in advance for any replies. Al |

Hey Cheers Bill, After I installed the extra RAM I noticed the OS 8.5 ran much quicker so that's good news about System 7 running better still. I've been so impressed with the build quality of this laptop, that I've just bought another one that's already equipped with wi-fi..... Al

8.5 actually had a freely downloadable bugfix update, 8.6. Either way, 7.6.1 will be faster than both of them. http://main.system7today.com/articles/til/benchmarks.html

You have to be carefull with the 1400's, once you get one it can never seem to stop. They can be addictive. I know, I started with one, bought new, and repaired and upgraded it. (total of 3 with a 4th near completion) Then with the leftover parts, I built them too. Enjoy a good powerbook!

Quote from: "althemusicwizard" The computer came with OS B1-8.5. I am running a 1400 with 466Mhz g3 and 64mb ram. The 8.6 is not slow, but the 761 is fast. Some old reviews and such in the Web tells that one should have 64mb minimum for 8.6 pb1400 is nice, you should have plenty of good times ahead of you.
