Nothing, since they all require USB and that hasn't been worked out yet on Mac OS 7, and likely will never work.

ipods are very specific to which itunes they will work with seamlessly. Each release of an ipod is greeted with a new itunes update which means updating time. They could be used as an external hdd as long as the os will see it as a hard drive and possibly work that way.

First and second generation iPods do work with Mac OS 9 and iTunes 2, but those generations require Firewire.

Are there any mp3 players for the SJ+ & 7.6.1 combo?

On the market are available converters to connect scsi peripherals to an usb port. How about otherway around? Would those help with the mp3 player issue?

A link to a Linux page. They have made a serial port interface to connect a regular Minidisc player to a computer.

Sonys software is pc only, but Minidisc players do have an audio-in also.Including Hi-MD models with 1 GB cartridgies.

How about DAT-tape? Are any audiophiles listening?

I listen lot of music and prefer (internet)radio to tv, which I have not had for the last 20 years, but I do my listening at home rather than on the road. So it took a moment to get the big picture.

Usb is not an issue here! Old macs play nicely with oldtech. The obvious choice: a portable cd-player that can play mp3 files! It do mix nicely with 7.6.1/SoundJam+/Toast

Portable cd-players are plentiful, cheap and the latest are not much bigger than a cd itself. A cd can hold mighty amount of mp3s. Obviously it is not for everyone, but for me that is portable enough as I would not carry a player with me everywhere.

A hack, ready for installation was available some time ago to make iTunes run in os 8.6. I am sure it is still going round and round the net.

Which has absolutely nothing to do with iPods.

Ipods are not for 761, but are for 9. And for someone who is running 8.6 for one reason or other, rather than 9. For him that useless bit of info could be useful, so he do not have to upgrade just to get an ipod working.

No, you misunderstand.  iPods require iTunes 2 or higher.  That version of iTunes requires Mac OS 9.something.  Only iTunes 1.x can be hacked to run on Mac OS 8.6.

Really? Live n' learn! I did not knew that, thanks.(don't have a pod, you see).

Have you tried Audion3 with an iPod then? They do say one can use it with an iPod without iTunes and it do go lower in OS's than iTunes.

I knew that the hack is for 1.x only, but not that iPods start working only from 2.x's

I think I have found a working solution to use mp3 player with 761/SoundJam+ combo!

First I posted here elsewhere about Philips exp431 (8cm cd's,200MB) portable cd-player that can play mp3 files. It is small and find, but if you go for it, buy other than US version to get inbuild charging.

But now I am on a track after a real mp3 player, that uses removable CF's and Microdrive's! You can load mp3s in a mac with 761, and then just pop the card into the player. I hope formatting do not wreck this plot from working.

I got my first hint for it from here: http://www.fixup.net/tips/mp3/

The plot is thickening! Drums, please!

Here is an Amazon ad of an out of stock Nexia player. But the page includes specs for the player.

http://www.amazon.com/Frontier-Labs-NEX-MP3-Player/dp/B0000SVSO4

Removable media!! It has usb, but who cares!! It also include AC/DC power adapter, so I bet that can be used for charging the thing instead of usb connection. And it works with two standard AA-batteries!!

It is Windows 98SE compatible, so VPC3 works!!!!!

CF and Microdrive readers are available for scsi connection.

The actual brand is Frontier Lab, but the players seem to go with variations of Nex something or Nexia. An ad I found said their player to be the only one with removable media, but have not check if it is true. Even the latest model works with CF & MicroDrive.
