http://www.applematters.com/index.php/section/history/march-8-1998-whats-in-a-number-several-million-dollars1/ Steve Jobs just changed the name to Mac OS 8 because the licensing agreement with the clone makers extended to all future versions of System 7. By renaming to 8, Jobs essentially voided the clone makers licensing agreements because there now was no more System 7 for them to license. |

Yes. There are some unified system components that still bear the 7.7 version number within Mac OS 8 "Tempo". Mac OS 8 was originally going to be Copland - a ground up rewrite of the Macintosh Operating System, when Copland was cancelled - publicly it was only announced it would be "shipped piece meal as part of several OS upgrades beginning with Mac OS 8.0" - the Mac OS 8 name was given to the Mac OS 7.7 update program which had been named "Tempo." Mac OS 9.x also has unified system components labeled as being v.8.7 as a similar renaming occurred when the Rhapsody project was renamed Mac OS X. As Always, The Bandit
