I recently bought a used Peforma 631CD from a thrift store and have been tinkering with it. It's currently running 7.5.4. I have a CD of 7.6, but I can't install it (or anything else, for that matter) because the CD drive only sort of works. It opens and closes, but that's it; it's doesn't spin up, and the CD doesn't show up on the computer. All I'm currently using it for is displaying the video from Gamecube and PS2 games through the video input card; it works fine for that, but I'd like to be able to network it with my iMac G5 (running Tiger) through ethernet. When I try to connect the Performa says, "This file server uses an incompatible version of the AFP protocol..." and of course I can't upgrade AppleTalk because it's too large for the floppy drive. Since the drive is getting power and opening and closing fine, I thought this might be some correctable SCSI problem. Does anyone have any tips? Or if my drive's actually fried, anyone know any good place to get a suitable replacement that will boot, or possibly some workaraound I haven't thought of? Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Well, for your computer to even see the other one in order to determine that AFP is incompatible, then you know your ethernet works. You can connect that computer to the internet. Search the hard drive and see if you have a browser of some sort (Netscape probably), set the TCP/IP control panel to Ethernet with DHCP, and you can navigate to this site and try to download and install the updates, which may or may not work with 7.5.4. Alternatively, you can set your G5 as an FTP and Web server, and connect to it's IP address over the network through a browser on your Performa. Welcome to the site, BTW!

Wow, talk about a fast reply. Thanks! Unfortunately, I don't see a TCP/IP Control Panel anywhere. I saw it mentioned in tutorials on this site, but maybe it's not present (or named something else) in 7.5. The iMac is running a webserver, so I've tried going to its local IP address on the Performa's Internet Explorer just to see if it worked, but it didn't. I also can't get to the internet, even though I have Internet Sharing enabled from Airport to Ethernet. I suppose I can try hooking the Performa up directly to my router via ethernet... It's just on the other end of the house. I'll see about that tomorrow, probably.

Quote from: "Crazy Chucky" Wow, talk about a fast reply. Thanks! If you do not see the TCP/IP Control Panel, then the machine is probably setup using Classic Networking. If that is the case, then you should see a MacTCP Control Panel. Classic Networking uses less RAM and fewer resources than does OpenTransport, however OpenTransport offers vastly improved networking. If you can enable TCP/IP then the 630 should have no trouble connecting to the iMac via a web interface or using FTP. I would recommend Fetch for FTP on an old 631. bill

Hmmm, I don't see MacTCP either. The most apparently relevant Control Panel I see is ConfigPPP 2.5, but it only has options for modem and printer ports.... after all, it's PPP, not PPPoE. Nothing has anything resembling TCP/IP in its name.

You might not "see" TCP/IP, but chances are its there (or MacTCP), but disabled or moved or something. Make sure you're in the finder (as opposed to some other application), hit Command + F to bring up a find file dialog, and type in "TCP" and it will let you know if it's on your system, and where it is.

Nothing has anything resembling TCP/IP in its name. Network Software Selector was used with System 7.5 to select between OpenTransport and Classic Networking. It worked by making which ever set of network control panels were not being used invisible. It is possible that this had been used and at some point the needed and visisble control panels were erased. If this application is on your system you might try and run it to see if it brings anything back. Classic Networking uses the control panels "Networking" and "MacTCP", while OpenTransport uses "AppleTalk" and "TCP/IP" for networking. On machines found in schools and businesses one often found "AdminTCP" instead of "MacTCP", athough functionally identical, AdminTCP made it difficult for the user to change any settings that would interfer with its network settings. Since your 630CD seems to recognize that another machine exists via AppleTalk, it is probably safe to assume that networking was installed at some point. This would indicate that you are simply missing the Control Panels. The Control panels themselves are small enough to be transfer to the 630CD using a floppy disk. bill

Isn't there an extension manager that could be checked to see if any of the networking control panels are even turned on or extensions installed?

Hey, your topic steered away from your cd problem. Did you figure it out? The drive is fried, mine did the same thing in my 630CD. Tray worked fine, cd just wouldn't spin. Bought a new one on ebay. Quite simple to replace, to. After you take front off of machine, there is one screw to remove, then the drive literally just slides out, it is plugged in to a plug that is mounted in the case, not seperate connectors. I have drive that should work, if you want it I can list it on ebay, there is always some on there. You need a 300i , at least that would be the direct replacement, but is is only 2x. Faster ones should work, I believe. Good luck. Paul

I was going to suggest that it sounds like the motor in the drive is fried if everything else works but it won't spin. You can probably get a replacement drive or another machine that can be used for parts for not too much money, or if you're the tinkering type, you can pull the motor out of the drive, test it, and see if Radio Shack can match it, so all hope is not lost. It's a good thing Apple built their machines like tanks. There's so many of them still functioning after all this time that parts supplies aren't an issue even though they've all long passed the end of official support from Apple.

Replacement drives are like a dime a dozen on eBay. I'm not sure if the 630 takes IDE or SCSI. I have machines that have IDE hard drives but SCSI CD-ROM drives, like my 6500.

The 630 was the last 68k machine Apple released. It has an ide hard drive and a SCSI CD drive. It was available in many different configurations. bill
