I want to use PPC9600/200 (OS7.6.1) to access some files from a PC hard disk (Pentium 3 with OS Window 2000). The network of this PC using RJ45 router with 100Mbps. After PPC9600 plugged into the router, I can use both 2 computers in the router to access the internet. Both the PC nor 9600 cannot detect each others. I am sure the 2 computers are well connected with the router because I see the lights of the corresponding RJ45 socket are on and browsing internet is ok. Now, for smaller size files, I can send to email account and download from the other computers. But for big files, the email server will reject it. I heard from someone that through some kind of TCPIP freeware, the 2 computers can have file exchange from the LAN. Pls see if anyone has experience on this file exchange and give me some tips ? thanks. |

Windows and Mac OS use completely different file sharing systems, so to get your Power Mac 9600 to talk to your PC, you'd have to get third-party Windows networking software, such as an old copy of DAVE or something.

If your Pentium III machine is running Win2kPro then activating FTP should allow you to access files on the Win machine. NetPresenz 4.1 is an FTP server (and other servers as well) that should work to make the PPC9600 into an FTP server that could be accessed from the Pentium machine. File sharing as mentioned by Dan requires not free commercial software. bill

Thanks very much. The Pentium 3 using Win2KPro, I will try to activate the FTP function later. Yesterday, I installed the NetPresenz 4.1 into the 9600 successfully. And built owner & new user name with password and with access rights. I tried to view from PentiumIII on network neiborhood but can not see the 9600 FTP server. But both machines can assess the internet. So, the connection is good. I think I just need a few more steps to be able to access from the Pentium. Sorry of my dump knowledge of the FTP server. Could you please give a bit more procedures how the Pentium to access ? Should I need to install something in the Pentium to access the 9600 FTP server ? thanks a lot.

A string formatted similar to the one below should be typed into the address bar of the ftp client on the Pentium. I think Internet Explorer will work. "ftp://192.168.0.xxx/ftpdirectory" The number string is the IP address for the 9600 that can be found in the TCP Control Panel on the 9600. "ftpdirectory" is the name of the folder on the 9600 where you have the files stored. If "ftpdirectory" is not at the top level of your hard drive then you need to type in the path to it from the top level. Making the string look something like: "ftp://192.168.0.xxx/topdirectory/anotherdirectory/ftpdirectory" Once you activate ftp on the Pentium the proceedure would be just reversed to get file on the Pentium using the 9600. If you have the server set to use a password, then the client will prompt you to enter your username and password. bill
