Hello,

New member here, long time Macintosh user since about 1990/91 when I used a Macintosh Classic at school, and got my first Mac a IIsi in 1995. The former ran System 7 and I used it for a good few years before finding a IIfx...

...and to cut a long story short, I have been consistently using Word 5.1, Excel 4.0 and PageMaker since those days, though I admit that on my PowerBook 12-inch and PowerMac G4 I use Adobe CS2 Suite a lot more than I do the older Adobe apps!

Until recently I was running all of my old stuff on my G4 through Classic or booting Mac OS 9; but that wasn't quite the same. Before that I did have a Power Macintosh 8500 with a G3 upgrade but I sold it and sadly only had Mac OS 8.6 for it.

I have now acquired a PowerBook 1400cs/133, 40MB, 1GB HD, good battery, original user manual and System 7.6 and Apps disc (genuine!)with an Apple Portable Stylewriter (basically a Canon BJ10 printer) for £19!

The only downside is that at present I purchased a third party WaveLan card (a 2wire one) and it will only work on OS 8.6 with the 7.2 drivers :( Was wondering if I could resedit the 6.0 drivers to make it work under System 7.6.1--so regretably I'm not running 7.6 even though I'd love to, using OS 8.6 but with black and white appearance to make it look like System 7--never did like the Platinum appearance much!

Anyway enough of my whittering and hello! :)

Hi Vicky,

I can relate to those third-party wireless cards. I have a Dell 1150 TrueMobile card that only likes 8.6 as well. I partitioned my drive and installed 7.6.1 in one partition and 8.6 on the other, so my loss is not too bad since I can use 7.6.1 anytime by booting into it with Apple's system picker.

You know, the authentic Lucent / Orinoco cards are really really cheap on eBay.

I also have one of these 2wire rebranded agere/lucent /orinoco cards, old v6 driver (for use under 7.6.1) doesn't seem to recognize the 2wire as an orinoco and exits, saying install the card, double click icon and turn on appleshare, but not letting you install.

anybody got a Hack to get 2wire/rebrands to work with the old drivers?
  edit the driver?
flash the card with bona-fide orinoco firmware?

otherwise I just may have to step up to 8.6

Honestly, the authentic ones are pretty cheap.  Where are you people getting this 2wire stuff from anyway?

I've heard that if one sticks it into a airport slot and does some apple update for airport, it'll reflash into a gold card.

there seems to be a belief that the regular orinoco cards will work fine in a airport slot (size permitting), saving an individual a significant amount of money.

These cards seem to run around $30, while the airport cards run 60+.

That seems to be some pervasive urban legend. Airport cards do not fit in PCMCIA slots and PCMCIA wireless card do not fit in Airport slots. The plastics could be trimed so they would slide in, but then one find that the pins do not line up. It just does not work.

airport cards fit in PCMCIA slots upside down...

and orinoco cards fit in at least the ibook airport slots.

check online, some guy made it work without too much trouble.
