I thought I saw this mentioned somewhere here, but now I can't find it. I just got a PB 1400 with 8.5 or 8.5.1 installed on it. It's very pretty, I have to say, and I'd like to keep it around, but I can already see that the memory footprint is a little bigger, and I'd like to try it with 7.6.1. No original install disks for 8.5, so once it's gone, it's gone (unless I can figure out how to back it up). Is there a way to install 7.6 on the same drive and still have to option to boot into 8.5? I expect a partitioned drive could handle this easily, but can I partition a drive with data on it? |

Yes, that's what I was looking for! I've been away from the Classic OS that all these little tricks have fled my brain. Unfortunately I can't seem to persuade my 7.6 CD to install on the same HD as 8.5. It goes through the whole routine, but then aborts in the end. Maybe if I boot from an external source, I'll have better luck than trying to run the install on the disk that I'm using. Unfortunately I haven't been successful in booting from the CD, which I thought I could do (maybe I have the keystroke wrong, but even picking the CD as the start up volume doesn't work), but maybe I can install 7.6 on to a flash card and try booting from that for the install. Someone on the Apple forums was in favor on backing up the HD, partitioning, restoring 8.5 to one half, and installing 7.6.1 on the other. I would like to do that, but can I just drag the contents of my hard drive to another location (I'm guessing I'd need to use a flash card), then drag it back and have it remain bootable? Anyhow, I'll keep at this. So far it's pretty cool. I've to the new Powerbook to share the wireless connection, so that's pretty exciting for me. If I can get 7.6 on there to, and get VNC to work, I'll be a happy camper.

Hi, I have a powerbook 1400 and dual boot 7.6.1 and 8.6 using system picker I just partiion the drives 50/50 one for each. It was the least headached way for me to solve it. haven't had any troubles for 9 months.

I'm not entirely sure, as I've never tried it myself, but I've read that System Picker does not work with Mac OS 9.

I like the partitioning idea, and if it's possible, that's the route I'll go. I just was under the impression that without the original install disks for 8.5, I wouldn't be able to reinstall it. But what I'm hearing on the apple forums is that that's not true; that the entire contents of my hard drive can be copied to an external source, like a compact flash card, and copied back to the hard drive and remain bootable. I guess the test will be to see dragging everything to the CF makes a bootable flash card. If it does, I don't have to worry about losing 8.6 when I partition the hard drive.

It does work that way. It occourred to me after reading the intial post again what you said. partioning will wipe out any existing data. I was installing clean installs on to a drive. I can come up with several ways to try it but having the install disks keeps me from offering them. Sorry to have made things complicated.
