I just buoght a PowerBook 5300cs/100MHz system memory 16MB installed a new OS7.6.1 into the 500MB Hard drive. And I have a PCMCIA adaptor with 64MB and formated as HFS format. I read from other Forum articles that the CF card can be a quite HD for start up booting drive. But a minimum space requirement should be around 70 MB of a OS7.6.1. Anyone has tried a very "Slim" version of OS7.6.1 that less than 60MB (and with the speed doubler installed) ? (assume some resources around 4MB will be used by the system after 64MB formated as HFS) thanks very much. |

Wal-Mart had 2GB CF drives for $24.99 the last time I was there.

or check here daily: http://bargainjack.com/ every day they update with new deals on stuff online, half of it is all electronics. I've seen plenty of great deals on CF cards.

A quick look to 7.5.3 gave an installation size of 43.57 MB with some unchecking. It is possible you have to add something to it after the installation to modernize it, but there is still some room to do it. Use manual installation option and for each option you choose, the installer shows how much space is needed. With the 7.5.3 at least. I do not remember how it is with 7.5.5, but my 7.6.1's do not show it the same way. You can download 7.5.3 (+updater to 7.5.5) from: http://www.pure-mac.com/appud.html Good luck!

The Zip Tools that use to come with Zip drives included and option to build an emergency startup system. This would create a very slim system and you could add utilities and other items to create small bu useful bootable drive. While designed for working with Zip Drives, it seems it could easily be repurposed to work with CF cards etc. bill

thanks guys, I will try all your suggested after the power cord plug has been fixed in coming weekends. (The battery can't work already and the existing plug has loose and easily get power off if I touched the plug/power cable.)

Did a small test without actually installing and got down to 40MB. I wasn't making any hard decisions either, just took out the easy ones.

Keep in mind that unless you have plenty of ram installed, you'll have to leave some space on the CF card for VM.. CF cards are cheap these days.. I picked up a pair of 1gig Lexar cards for $14.00 each a few months ago from Office Depot.. I haven tried using one for an OS install yet, but have used a 64mb card for dedicated VM for a couple of years.. After upgrading the HD to a faster / larger model, the CF card actually slowed the book down, so it's using the HD for everything now.. If you use a gig card or larger, you should be able to remove the HD all together and double your battery life.. Best of luck with your project!! ................... Tommy
