Hi, can someone help me? I have a PowerMac 7100 running Sys. 7.6.1, with a 2 gig Jaz drive and PD650 drive, both external. I used to use the drives for backup on digital audio projects, but they haven't worked properly for many years. The media always show up as locked so I can't write to them. I used to also use a G3 with Sys. 9.2 with the same external drive setup so that I could swap the files from one computer to another. The G3 has been replaced with a G4 and firewire/USB.

I'm guessing that something about Sys. 9 screwed up the media for Sys. 7 so they are permanently locked. Is there a way to wipe the data on the Jaz and PD media so I can reformat them to use on the older system? There isn't anything on them I want to save. Thanks.

I do not have any hands on experience with either drive, but will make a couple rather generic suggestions.

Do the cartridges themselves have a lock and is that set?

If the disk is mounted, do a "Get Info" from the "File" menu. Sometimes you see a locked check box and the disk can be unlocked by unchecking the box.

Jaz drives were built by Iomega and Iomega tools that are included with many Mac OS installers might be able to unlock the disk and probably re format it as well.

You might try this site for a 3rd party disk utility that will format the disks.
