Can I run system 7.6.1 on a g3 mac?  I have a g3 powerbook I'd like to try to downgrade for the heck of it.

And also, if not, what would be the fastest laptop I could run system 7.6.1 on?  How about a g3 upgraded ppc powerbook?

Welcome to System 7 Today!  Mac OS 7.6.1 will not run on any system that originally shipped with a G3 processor.  However, you can run it on G3-upgraded systems.

The fastest PowerBook would be a PowerBook 2400c with a G3.  Unfortunately, these are extremely rare, and the G3 upgrades are even rarer.

The fastest stock system would be a PowerBook 3400c/240, which features a 603ev.  This was the direct predecessor of the G3 (consider it a G2).  These are far more common, and will run 7.6.1 exceptionally fast.  Being the last "new" systems to run Mac OS 7.6.1, they actually require their own specialized copy of 7.6.1, which can sometimes be hard to come by.

A third option is a PowerBook 1400c with a G3 upgrade, both of which are far more common than the above options.  The PowerBook 1400c is a NuBus system, however, and thus has slow video, which cannot be upgraded.

wait a sec, I thought that the 2400c and the 3400c shipped along with 7.6, which required a special CD?

I have the Special 7.6 CD for my 3400c, which also works for my 2400c as well.

the stock 7.6.1 CD works fine.
