I have three to choose from. Want some input on what is more important, speed, expandability, or memory... 4400/200...has 48MB RAM, a 2GB IDE HD, 8X CD-ROM, 4MB VRAM in it now...can be upgraded to 160MB of RAM...has room for 3 PCI cards...CD-ROM is only 12X but still works AFAIK...requires screwdriver to open case...still uses ADB input devices instead of USB...has built-in Ethernet...a Radius video card in the first PCI slot...could I use a USB PCI card in the second slot...will USB run under 7.6.1? 6500/225...stripped...could put in up to 128MB of RAM...room for CD-ROM and at least 2 HD's (1 SCSI, 1 IDE)...good looking but hard to take case apart...this ran very well under 8.6 and later 9.1 but the video was VERY slow...only 2 PCI slots and one has to go for Ethernet so I can use the DSL...so that leaves me only 1 PCI slot remaining and I'd want better video but also want to use a USB CD-RW drive I have as well as a digital camera my wife uses for work...again does USB work under 7? 7600/120...this has only 16MB of RAM in it AFAIK but it can be upgraded to a whopping 1GB of RAM...VRAM can only go to 4MB though...I think that's already maxed out...has built-in Ethernet and 3 free PCI slots but I think there's a Radius video card in the first one... I'm thinking my best bet is to find a 200MHz 604e processor card for the 7600, max out the RAM, get a Radeon 7000 video card, drop in some decent size SCSI HD's, and roll with it. But the 4400 has the best specs as of now and I think I have enough RAM lying around that I can get up to 64MB if not 72 or 80. I may start out with that and then get the 7600 built up. The 6500 has sentimental value and the highest clock speed but it's a 603e and only has one available PCI slot and that HAS to go for video. I hated waiting for eBay Motors pages to load on that thing. Took 2 minutes on average, and even longer if they post a lot of pictures! Or I could try and find the big boy, the 9600/350, and load it up to 1.5GB of RAM, find all kinds of goodies to fill the 5 PCI slots remaining after putting in a video card, and let her run wild. What do you think? |

Mac OS 7.6.1 cannot use USB. However, you can find SCSI CD-RW drives. I use a Yamaha drive, and it works great with Toast 3 on Mac OS 7. Don't use Toast 4 though, as it installs Appearance Manager which you do not want. The 7600 would be the fastest machine, as for a very low price on eBay, you can put a fast Sonnet G3 processor in it. The G3 processors make 7.6.1 really scream, and adding a Radeon 7000 on top of it is even better. Then you'll still have two PCI slots left for whatever else you want. Many Macs, including the 7600, should have built in ethernet. If it doesn't appear to have a common RJ-45 ethernet port (big telephone jack), then it may have an AAUI port that looks like really long usb. The symbol for it would be <-->.

Unfortunately the 7600 I have is only a 120MHz machine. But unless I find a cheap or nearly free 8600 or 9600, I may be best off using it then. I just hope I have enough memory to make it run well. Should be able to get 64MB or 80MB in it. Some of these RAM chips I have are unlabeled and google searches of the numbers on them doesn't get me anywhere. I guess the best way to figure out the RAM thing is fire up the 4400 with 8.6, which includes the Apple System Profiler, and put chips in two at a time and make a list of what's what. Then take the biggest ones and put them in the 7600. I think it has 8 slots so if I can find 6 16's in this mess, the 2 32's I have will bring me up to 160MB which ought to be enough.

I guess it'll be awhile before I can jump into the 7 world...I found a G4/400 on Dallas Craigslist for $60. But I'll continue to try and sell the beige G3 and 6500 and 4400 and if I get enough out of selling them outright or parting them out, I'll put the 7600 together since it already has 7.6.1 on it and is ready to run except for a monitor. And I just got 17 monitors off eBay for 99 cents, and although none of them are guaranteed to work, I also have two more Dell VGA monitors in the closet I could use with it. One of the 17 is a 15" AppleVision A/V display, like the ones sold with 660av and 840av computers! HDI-15 connector and all! Wowzers!

OS X 10.2.8 G4/400 384MB RAM 10 and 40GB HD's DVD-ROM external CD burner 17" silver eMachines monitor Pro keyboard and mouse stock 16MB Rage 128 AGP video this thing flies... now I just need moar video... and I sold all my old stuff. All I have left is the IIsi running 7.6.1, and the two kids' iMacs running 9.1 If I come across any more 99ยข computers, I still have 7.6.1 on a 250MB HD and will use it if I get the chance... until then, thanks for all the help!

Hi, you don't actually NEED a 200Mhz-Processor to run OS 7.6. I have it on my Performa 475, which runs at 25 Mhz, and it works fine with that 68040. I think, you should install it on the 6500, which I find the coolest machine of them all. The 4400 is not that cool at all: as you said, you need a screw driver to open it, and it uses a cheap PC-box instead of a "real" Mac one. Enjoy your system 7 install :-) Demyan

I would go with the 7600. It probably has the most expandability options and will take you further along the MacOS chain later if you want to upgrade. I have a 7500, which is the same machine but with a PPC601 instead of a 604 in it and that's what I'm going to do.
