Hey guys, Don't ACTUALLY worry about this, but wanted to note, I just got my pb 170 online using vespernet. It only has a 1 bit display, no grey AT ALL, and the forum shows up as all black boxes using Netscape 3. I tried all sorts of things under "General Preferences"/"Colors" like "Always Use Mine" and setting the background and link etc colors, both black on white and white on black, but nothing seems to make things visible. The rest of the site looks great, so it's just the forums. I want to stress, strongly, that I don't REALLY care if it works or not, but am just reporting my experience using a very old very limited machine, and thought you might want to know. In case there are any SE/30 or other ilk users out there that might visit, we could give them a better experience. I haven't tried any other browsers, and it may be netscape's fault... |

SheepShaver will do a 1 bit display under OS X. Cyberdog displays the forum with a white box and black text, perfectly usable. iCab produces the same results as you experienced all black boxes as did Classilla. I do not have either IE or Netscape installed to try them out. QEMU only allow for whatever options you have on the host system, so for OS X you can not do a 1 bit display. Classic running on OS X is also limited to the options you have in OS X.

It does not surprise me that an Apple built browser, would be able to handle a 1 bit depth screen. Apple has always been good with usability and accessibility. Allowing for good contrast even as bit depth shrinks is a very Apple thing to do. I have wondered how that came about at Apple. Jobs for whatever solid insights into what makes for a good computer, kind of strikes me as someone who would run over a person in a wheelchair; just being too impatient to wait for them to cross the road. I can see him supporting accessibility work, but not as someone who would initiate accessibility. But somehow accessibility did get into Apple's DNA. This is a good example of why accessibility is important to everyone.

Yeah from everything I've read and heard, Jobs was a horrible jerk. That sucks, but I enjoy hearing the legends about his business genius.
