There's an interesting little project playing out via Mastodon as part of #Marchintosh. Two enterprising members of the classic Mac world managed to connect Appletalk networks across the internet, (across an ocean!) using System 7, Apple Internet Router 3.0 and some networking voodoo. At this point, it sounds like they've just been able to print documents remotely to an Imagewriter, but who knows what else can happen. Found this kinda neat and wanted to share it here. There is a link below that requires a modern browser. Pushing Appletalk Across the Internet -- https://biosrhythm.com/?p=2767 |

Whoa!! That's amazing!!!If it can do real Macs, it may also just do emulated ones as well! And as far as System 7.1? Wow, just wow! Which means that higher Mac OSes are just inches away from joining in on the same fun! ![]() Thanks for an spectacular Mac news post, Mac-Cellar; you don't know just how timely this particular networking tidbit is, and will be, for me as well!!

That's a cool thing. The coolest is that this might enable previously LAN-only games to be played via internet. Might just revive the online gaming scene a bit :-) I do remember a similiar project though. I'm not sure but I think it was an individual who emulated a AppleTalk network over TCP/IP, allowing you to connect to it. I'm sure I have the link on one of my Macs, I just can't find it at the moment ...

He he, don't you start turning into Adespoton too, Bolkonskij! ![]() But any and all projects that can do this deserve our support and attention, especially when it involves this level of connectivity! AppleShare alone's awesome, but the entire chooser print panel is just wild; I mean, remote printing as well? Wow!

The creators of this project have opened it up for others to add their own networks as nodes. I've already seen talk of getting a round of Bolo going.

Along this same vein: here's what I believe to be a write-up of Apple's own AppleTalk Internet Router software! (modern link) https://wiki.preterhuman.net/AppleTalk_Internet_Router
