Handbrake is an excellent transcoder. <https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/handbrake> It was originally made for BeOS, but is available for most everything now. I still use it on my PM G5.

If you can't (easily) find a version of HandBrake, you should look into ffmpeg, which is command line only, but I believe even HandBrake uses behind the scenes.

I should probably have provided the link to all the versions of HandBrake. Handbrake has all their releases for all their supported platforms going back to before v1. The can be found here. <https://handbrake.fr/old.php> Handbrake requires vlc to be installed as well. @lauland is absolutely correct the ffmpeg will do the job as well. It does not have a gui, so has a much stepper learning curve, but for speed and consistent results it can not be beat.
