I recently ran into ftp.funet.fi/pub/ and it has a very nice Mac section with lots of software from the System 6 and 7 days. Given it's an FTP server, I can download stuff even directly from System 6, which is niiice!

It's really a trip back in time to log into an FTP server, downloading the index file, reading through the descriptions while take a sip from your coffee mug and then download whatever you pick.

ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/
ftp://sunsite.icm.edu.pl/pub/mac/
ftp://ftp.jussieu.fr/pub/mac/info-mac/ (Info Mac mirror)
ftp://ftp.mayn.de/pub/really_old_stuff/apple/macintosh/
ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/packages/ccic/software/mac/ (lots of Chinese / Jap stuff)

Does anyone know of any other public FTP servers ?

My go-tos have been those old mirrors for U-Mich and the like, but I don't have any recent FTP lists :(

Here's one which might be a struggle for System 6 ;)

ftp://sunsite.icm.edu.pl/pub/mac/

This has mirrored Mac sites; garbo, info-mac, tucows-mac, and umich.
If you go back up one level via the Parent Directory link, you'll also find several Unix, Windows, etc, ftp locations to browse.

From that initial Mac link:

The Tucows Mac mirror is large, consisting mainly of demo or trial or shareware and freeware downloads. To view the (mostly) classic downloads, open it to the ftp://sunsite.icm.edu.pl/pub/mac/tucows-mac/files/ directory. If you go back up from this page to its parent directory, then scroll down that list to a "Files1" directory you would find mainly OS X content in there. The Tucows mirrored files have no index available in the abstract sense, scroll for download links, only.

That's a very nice link @MTT!

Beware, Umich and Info-Mac open up fine on System 6 (7), but Tucows munches up all the 4 MB of RAM that Fetch was assigned :D

Too bad the Info-Mac archives are all mostly from the early 2000s. Here's another one from France:

ftp://ftp.jussieu.fr/pub/mac/info-mac/

It appears that Info-Mac admins were in the business of rigorously deleting older files, so finding a full dump of Sumex-AIM (info-Mac) from around 1992 or something would be golden for us System 7 users. There were lots of mirrors around, so I'm hoping that one day something will turn up.

It's a beast :) It took about 5 minutes to open that link on my beige G3 ! (slow connection) I didn't think it was going to get there for a while.

Very cool ones, thanks for sharing 17lifers! Need to check them out when I'm at the IIci again (right now on the G4 Mini). From a first glance, it looks quite promising!

May I suggest the Macintosh Garden web site even if it is not System 6-7 related only? But it offers a public FTP access too.

The main drawback is it's not well organized in subfolders so listing the main folder could take very long time so it's better to type in the direct link string in Fetch to get your favorite files.

Speaking of Macintosh Garden, Paul Richards just put up a put up a Macintosh Garden FTP Search site here:
