I'm trying to copy Disk Copy 4.2 from my system software 7.5.2 CD, but it absolutely will not copy. When I try to drag it to my desktop, it says "Items from locked disks cannot be moved to the Desktop. Do you want to copy \"Disk Copy 4.2\" to the startup disk?" If I click OK, it appears to copy, but when I eject the CD and try to run it, it says: "Please insert the disk: Apple Macintosh CD" Copying it and trying to paste with the Edit menu doesn't work, because Paste is grayed out. I can copy just fine from a burned system 7.5.3 CD. I was also able to copy files and programs in the past from my Mac OS 8 and Mac OS 9 install CDs (which were also burned), just not the 7.5.2 CD. Anyone know why this is happening? It's an official, legit Apple CD if that matters. |

Ok...this might blow your mind a little...every disk in classic MacOS 7/8/9 has it's own (invisible) "Desktop Folder" folder. You can see this if you drag an item off a floppy to the desktop and then eject the floppy...the item disappears! (But comes back when you insert that floppy again). So, it thinks you are trying to drag the file to the "Desktop Folder" of the cdrom...which is write only of course! You need to drag it to your hard drive directly (or anywhere else than the desktop). The "Please insert the disk..." message is probably because it copied an alias of the item, and not the item itself. Don't ask me why you it didn't do this with other disks/images in the past...But MacOS 8/9's Finder is a lot smarter than 7/7.5's... I'm betting you were booted into a different os than you were just now, maybe? (Cut/Copy/Paste for copying/moving items doesn't work in the Finder, you'll just get the filename usually!)

Hi Lauland, I had forgotten about that, so thanks for pointing that out But the weird thing is, the first place I tried copying it to was a folder on the hard drive. Not the desktop folder, but a folder I created. It kept doing it, and I kept closing the folder, so I got tired of always having to open the folder again, so to make it (what I thought) was easier, I started trying to copy it to the desktop instead, forgetting about that fact you mentioned haha.Even when I tried to run it from the folder I copied it to, it would still ask for the CD. It copied fine to the folder with a burned 7.5.3 CD.

Ah, the good 'ol separate desktop issue! But might this be something that may have to do with the file's properties under the get info dialog? I know that when a file is locked, it might do funny things. (yet usually that's not really an issue!) Another possible way to trick the system may be to try to archive the item to a .sit or .bin file or better yet create an unlocked image and copy it into there and/or combine both tricks and archive the file into an unlocked image. It sure sounds like a lot of work to copy one silly file, but trust me when I say that if we work long enough with the Mac desktop, you come across all sorts of mayhem such as this! ![]() I temporarily uploaded it to the Disk Copy page in the Garden for you, it's the last download, let me know if the download works out for you of if you need it in a different container format: http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/disk-copy-42 I tried to hunt down a temp file hosting site only that also does http links, but I suppose any such sites are all in the past now? If any one know of any, I'd love to get the link to them!
