I picked up a MacBook Pro, last week, and it has 10.11.x on it, and works really well. The only problem is it loads web pages worse than my Power Mac 7200 does. So I was going to download and install a newer OS X version, but before I do, I was going to look up what the highest version is that it can run.

The problem is that multiple MacBooks came up for the info I put in.

Here's the info I have:
MacBookPro8,1
A1278
13" screen
512 MB VRAM
i5 2.4 GHz
16 GB RAM
250 GB HD

I didn't find any MacBooks that fit this criteria. It's possible the RAM and HD were changed, so I was using the MacBookPro8,1, A1278, and video RAM and CPU to look it up, but the sites I usually rely on for details didn't match this.

The closest one I found was this one(modern browser needed):

But that one has a 2.3 GHz i5. Also, that one also has a larger hard drive. I found a 2.4 GHz i5, but that one (modern browser needed):

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks :)

Not too familiar with recent OS X incarnations, but I'd advise to upgrade to High Sierra 10.13. It carries some more bloat, but nothing like 10.14 yet browsers like Firefox still support it in their latest incarnations which should give you a couple of more years of use.

Could it be that the JavaScript engine in El Captain's browsers is too old already, so it has trouble rendering modern bloated trash. (does it load websites like the macintosh garden or system 7 today normally quick?)

I love how you called modern websites trash XD because I agree!

Oh yeah, it loads those websites (websites that are a shining example of what a website SHOULD be) in a snap.

It works great, except for rendering modern websites. Which is funny because it still seems like a really modern system. I'm trying to figure out which Firefox version works on it. When I have more time, I'll try other browsers, too.

It's insane that it's so hard to find modern browsers to work on something that recent. Heck, Linux would run GREAT on it, so it's stupid that just a simple browser can't, without installing a completely new OS.

You can go to <everymac.com> where you will find as section to find your Mac Model. There is a spot to enter the identifier. In that space you can enter the serial number. You must enter a captcha as well, but when done the site will enter the exact model information you are looking for.

As far as I know this works for all Mac models going back to the beginning so you you can find details even for 80s and 90s machines. I am sure it does require a newer browser. If you are running a newer OS X machine you can get the sites app "Mactracker" on the App Store.

I use it quite often to sort out various pieces of old Apple hardware. It covers everything that Apple has ever made. Cameras, printers, scanners, laptops, TVs, monitors; it has it all.

Everymac works 99% of the time, there are a handful of machines built after their official discontinuation date. My se/30 was one of those. It appears Apple continued to sell off some computers to education using up spare parts. I would still check though.

I run 10.11 on a 2010 17" MBP. It can run High Sierra, but I prefer El Capitan, since it runs the same older apps I use on my PM G5 running Leopard. Chroronaries, Bento and CircusPonies Notebook are my essentials. I use MacPorts to update older components in the BSD subsystem and have copied the web certificates and system certificates from Sonoma into the system keychain on El Capitan.

The ssl/tsl in El Capitan's Safari is out of date and chokes on some sites, but not too many. In those cases where it is essential to access the site I use PaleMoon, a Firefox ESR derivative that does a decent job on the garbage web. My MBP has a first gen i7 and 8GB of RAM. It is very snappy for day to day use and while it is a bulky system at 7lbs, I do really need the 17" screen to see it well enough to get anything done.

According to https://support.apple.com/en-us/108052 that is a "MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011)"

This page shows supported OS for the various models:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacBook_Pro

So looks like "10.13 High Sierra" is supported.

Lauland totally beat me to it! ;) I was about to day the exact same thing! :D this link was my confirmation of your specific MBP model:

http://web.archive.org/web/20231124151632id_/https://everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/specs/macbook-pro-core-i5-2.4-13-late-2011-unibody-thunderbolt-specs.html

According to that page, the only issue affecting these MacBooks running High Sierra is that although it supports HEVC (High-Efficiency Video Coding), it doesn't support hardware accelerated HEVC.

thanks guys! I pasted my serial, and it returned this one.

You guys were right. Also Bolkonskij, Safari in High Sierra does work way better. Thanks for the suggestion! :D
