A little off-topic rant ... but have you guys noticed how everything you want to look up these days has become a YouTube video?

There's certainly merits to having videos Everything where it's useful to watch somebody else doing something. (e.g. how to repair something)

But there's so much stuff that would be much much more accessible and useful as a simple website. I hate having to load a 20 minute video and fast forward to minute 6:22 just to get the five seconds of relevant information.

Oh and don't forget the forced commercials I have to endure before I can even start the video - which appears to be the primary driver behind this "everything video" decision. In effect, I spend up investing 5 minutes for finding a tidbit of info that 15 years ago I ended up finding in 30 seconds.

Am I the only one noticing it?
Am I the only one who finds it bothersome?

Alternative YouTube frontends such as Invidious and Piped exist, allowing you to watch YouTube videos without any interruptions from popups and advertisements.

Invidious even allows you to download the videos from YouTube without having a dedicated YouTube downloading software installed.

http(s)://iteroni.com/ is one such Invidious instance.

I am for videos to get me started on a number of things, at least once I come across a topic at a very high level, but the issue I see with videos is simply that there's a lot of folks who think they know how to share relevant information when they have no business creating content, but because of 'the masses' need to know now drive, they get tons of views :(

I have found some amazing Excel and Access videos done by actual super-users/trainers and they really hit some amazing stuff off the bat, but even then, because of their audiences very broad breath of experience levels, advanced users may find their focus on simplifying topics distracting because of how much they already know (but many content producers also suffer from their own takes on stuff, going off into very specialized tangents that at times leave you going, huh?)

So yes, simple websites are most effective, or anything that is very well designed, like actual 'paid-for' video courses, that makes things more reflective on the teacher or educator's ability's to convey information more than the format it's contained-in :)

Some of them will be totally awesome, like 'oh heck yeah!', some hilarious, entertaining and maybe educational 'spot on and ROFL' at the same time, while the rest vary from so-so 'meh..' to 'oh, gosh, no, please stop!!' :o
