Not sure why it had never dawned on me until I came across this article about government workers in the UK getting actually convicted over faulty computer software. Seems the price we pay for paperless everything is that digital reality can now easily overpower its analog cousin. If the machine says "you stole that money!", then you did steal that money. Because the truth of bits and bytes is now w/o competition from the realm of physical existance. If the computer claims "Candidate Joe Schmoe won the election!" then Mr. Schmoe did win the election. Who could prove otherwise? Computerized systems guide our armed forces, fly our drones, control our cars and with AI on the march they'll manage our thought processes, too. The machines won't have to rise up in revolt to defeat us. They'll just send us to prison and be done with it!
