Hi guys, I’ve had a bit of shimmer on my se/30 screen after some use for a while but it’s got worse in the last few weeks. Last time I looked on the av board (6 months ago) no obvious capacitor issues. I’ve recapped the main board and psu but not the av board. Do you think it’s more dry joints or do you think it needs a recap? Board says 1988 se. Although it’s a later se/30, could have been replaced for all I know or just the fact se & se/30 share the same board. Who knows. Any ideas what I should be looking for? |

Hi, not sure about "bit of a shimmer" but there used to be a Repair web page dedicated to the SE/30 with possible problem symptoms and solutions for them. The site has now gone, but the Web Archive has a copy. I don't know if any symptoms described on that page are related to your current SE/30 issue, though at sometime any one of them may occur and that page may offer some helpful advice to an SE/30 owner.

Thanks MTT, I’ll have a look. I replaced the hd a month ago so looked at the main board and that’s fine although I could probably do with replacing the battery it’s been in there 5-7 years now. That said I couldn’t see any leakage and it is still working. Leading me to the av board which I’ve never touched.

Oh, the notorious SE/30 again. These machines seem to be among the coolest and yet among the most unreliable System 7 Macs. Didn't I advise you to get a IIci, Neal? Yeah I know, not half as cool ... ;-) I've no diagnosis to offer other than saying that my SE suffers from something akin to this, the screen will start to "jitter" on the sides for a few secs until it goes back to normal. This also happens after using it for some time, which led me to believe it might be related to either heat or (small) power spikes. What I understand from the topics I read on this over the years is that it usually points towards capacitors on the AV board causing the issue, which is solved by a recap. If you haven't recapped your AV board, it's probably a good reason to do so.

Yes that was my fear, that’s the problem with all in one machines. You’re right I have also read the se/30 is regarded/voted the best Mac of all time but also the most problematic for a vintage. It is the only part i haven’t refurbished and the part that likely has the highest voltage and heat. So it’s no surprise after 35 years it’s on its way out. I’ll look for a refurb kit. I’m not great at soldering but at least there’s not many parts to the av board.

Any UK-based recap services for vintage computers around? Surely, someone must be fixing up all these old Amigas on the island ...

No success so far, I tried a few places and was turned down. I might just be better to buy a better soldering iron and do it myself. I was looking for a component kit for it. Just had a busy few weekends and out again this weekend so just need a free weekend. How was the festival?
