VMWZealot wrote over on the Mac Garden Quote I’ve been playing with trying to get Arashi running on my SE/30. I can get it to build okay, and even not to die with an error when I run in in Black & White mode - but I can’t actually get it to display anything on screen either. If you're interested, write him. I think with replacing a few Toolbox (draw) functions and especially resediting the graphics, this could work in a nice way! It also works both ways - games previously only available in b&w could be colorized and republished. It's a pity the retro Mac community is rather about collecting than creating these days. Due to the limited size of such projects, they make great weekend / hobby projects. |

This is where Cornica can help make that comeback!! (I think) ![]() Some of today's youth are tech-savvy enough to engage in some useful resediting, but they like sinking their teeth into some how-to videos to get that head-start impetus and engage the retro-community at large to see how far they can take things! ![]() This is also where emulation can help bridge some of the development gap as the programming and testing can be carried out there and can then lead to them actually acquiring some real Mac gear. ![]() The other side of the house is uploading some step-by-step videos on board recapping and other hardware maintenance how-tos, especially on Mac models that can safely be fixed with the right know-how. I'd be wary of people unknowingly cracking open any CRT all-in-ones and getting an electric zap from equipment they plugged in to see if it worked and not realizing the power-danger it packs inside the unit!

Well, there's nothing wrong with tutorial videos and I gladly put them onto Cornica every day! Been creating a few myself already, although no programming related ones yet. The problem is that I don't think it's a good idea to hope for the younger ones to come to our party. Apart from the fact that they don't hold the nostalgia we do (and boy, what a great time it was!) coding for Mac OS is tough. It needs a strong will and discipline to go somewhere because you can't just google a solution on Stackoverflow. You need to figure out things yourself. Tough ride. From my impression, that's not something the YouTube generation is interested in. They'd rather plug together some pre-made third-party components with Python and crave about being a "Software Engineer". I'm generalizing and that's wrong and right you are. There's some talented and great young folks out there, it's just that I wouldn't hold my breath for them taking on a Mac OS project. There's so many interesting projects out there and so little time as a young person. I'd rather place my hope with the retirees who lived through the golden ages of personal computing and either come back to programming Mac OS or start it anew as a hobby now that they can finally dedicate the time for it.

And that's what killed it for me.. I just wasn't adept enough at coding and yet what got me was that hundreds, if not thousands of ingenious solo programmers hammered-out brilliantly yet simple software hacks in the form of brilliant freeware and shareware titles, a labor of love to be sure.. Maybe Mac hobbyists of yesteryear simply had more time and less distractions? Like the Internet, social media accounts, the ageless OTA television, cable TV and an overload of streaming platforms, smartphones apps, mobile, PC/Mac and console-based games galore literally on every platform imaginable, you know? BUT isn't this exactly why we need to help the youth of today learn that it's okay to pull the plug on this information highway overload? I don't know, technology is awesome, but sadly, it appears that it's also apparently created a monster we let loose so many years ago

Wanted to let you guys know this was accomplished. Read all the gory (interesting?) details here: https://macintoshgarden.org/forum/calling-all-programmers-arashi-in-black-and-white Or just download it: https://macintoshgarden.org/games/arashi (The pdf summarizes the effort) Not fast enough to be playable on an unaccelerated 68000, but more work could be done...

So this limits it basically to the SE/30 - or those with color-capable Macs who prefer b&w for speed/aesthetics anyway ![]() Anyway, cool effort!

Yeah, I had a Classic II (slower than an se/30) and a couple mono powerbooks (faster), so I had the hardware to do it. It was strictly limited to 8 bit color, so now it'll run on anything. I did get it RUNNING on a "MacPlus", but it was my AMax Amiga, and I had to pull the accelerator out of it for that! I got it to that point and someone else could optimize it further...there's notes on ideas on how to do so...
