If you read what 68040 wrote about formatting losses with 2.0, I wouldn't hold my breath ... but who knows what will happen. |

I just wanted to add that I enjoy reading documentation. It is always nice to get insights into what all it takes to make things works. It is also very easy for esoteric information to just become lost. The details on how to make something happen over the longer haul is often more valuable than making something specific happen. It is nice of 68040 to share his procedures with us as well as his output.

Well, to make a long story short: I nailed it down to 2 procedures in 4 (albeit lengthy) Linux commands, that I assigned to aliases, because I am a lazy dude. Nr. 1 downversions a PDF to Acrobat Reader 3, 2 or even 1 format (ab)using "pdfwriter" Postscript Level 1 for hat purpose (requiring GS < v9.10). It tries to preserve as much formatting info as possible, which inevitably leads to large(r) file sizes as more complex info can only be preserved in older file formats by expanding said file. This may sometimes lead to files sizes of 50MB up to a 100MB and more(!) So, I came up with procedure Nr.2, which basically flattens the content of a PDF to a mere image, losing all text, font and curve info in the process. The downside to this is that as lower you specify the resolution as more jagged the outcome - and yes, it does show(!) Well, guess there is a price to be paid for everything in life. If - and please only if - folks here are truly interested in this I'll write up the details to these procedures and post the results here. It took an awful lot of "trial & error" to get this sheeit just right and luckily I can read (=understand) my own comment lines. But I wouldn't claim that of anyone else (ever tried to debug another guy's code and you know what I mean). ![]() So some detailed explanations will be required and I wouldn't want to invest the time this takes if it just fills up bandwidth around here.

@68040: your documenting insights are what got me anywhere with so much stuff; the same goes with so many contributions made here, the MG and E-maculation I really couldn't have done much of anything with all of you!I cheerlead because it's so cool to learn from everyone, each adding a cool process or element that when dumbed-down enough, I can play with and sometimes even get to use for something useful! My end goal with all this is to maximize my use of Classic Mac technologies and disconnect from the mess modern tech life is tied to. A bunch of site on phones and desktop browser dole up an endless barrage of junk ads and the built-in spyware in everything is scarier than I even want to begin to fathom. I'm hoping many others think the same and make these Classic tools we use daily the envy of retroness! ![]() So, yes, I am so totally down to getting your PDF-contortioning powers! And a tutorial guide sounds sweet, too! ![]() On my growing to do list are to transition from Android/Linux email clients to your Linux email rig, Crypto Acienne sounds like a lot of fun for some more powerful retro-browsing, too! Those two have been a bit too technical for me to wrap my brain around (yet) but I'm slowly coming along

@cballero - Then I'll try to get it done for you over the weekend. ![]() My time machine is almost ready - and now work is calling 9n me again. ![]() But hopefully, soon, I'll be free of that slavery.

Thanks 68040! No efforts are lost here my friend; each of our victories helps get us one step closer to Classic Mac perfection!
