Every now and then you trip across something that is insanely retro on so many levels. Yesterday I needed to sew a button back on my jacket and went looking for a needle and thread. The pin cushion which would if I were lucky have a threaded needle stuck in ready to use (assuming I was not fussy about the color of the thread). But there was not even a needle in the cushion. So I pulled out the small box of notions we have. In the bottom of the notion box was an advertising card for “Viking Snuff”. The card was in the shape of a tin of snuff, and opening the card revealed a couple sewing machine needles and selection of regular sewing needles. It was just what I was looking for, but I am curious what a snuff promotion has to do with sewing. Well the pitch inside was a hoot. “To the ladies…We hope this needle book will remind you that a man appreciates the many little thing you do for him…….like sewing on a loose button…..or buying a roll of VIKING when you go shopping. Men find VIKING to be the real snuff. Put VIKING on your shopping list today!” It has nothing to do with 68K hardware, but boy it hits old tech, old gender relations, and old personal habits all in one swing. Retro nirvana. |

hahaha, awesome story. Thanks for sharing, wove! Indeed, they knew their target audience :-) EDIT: I just heard Bing Crosby & The Andrew Sisters singing "Mele Kalikimaka", does that count as retro too? ;-)

Retro is hard to really define. One can speak of retro computers, but at the same time computer across the board are being supplanted by phones and tablets, so it might be fair to say the "computers" in general are retro. Retro to me refers to objects that are still serviceable but have generally replaced by items that do the same task easier or in a new way.In the fashion industry, retro just refers to a fad that has passed, much like using a desktop computer ![]() Retro probably differs from antique, in that antiques are typically far older and very often are no longer serviceable or even usable. Although the line is very blurry. Sewing and mending is mostly a pretty retro activity, being replaced with "fast fashion." An 1888 Baby Jesus Statue that belonged to your grandmother's grandmother is no doubt a treasured family heirloon, but it probably would also be an antique. Since such statues are still readily available and still serve the same purpose they might well not be considered retro. A roman wine gobblet is not retro, since it remains fully functional and usable for the same purposes it was originally made. For the first drink it is cool to be using something so ancient, by the 5th cup it is just something holding your booze.

Opened up a drawer the other day and found a bunch of tea lights my mum had bought many years back. Not for keeping tea hot, but for warming your soul in cold winter nights. So I decided to place one in an old fashioned jar, pulled out one of her match cases and lit up the flame. Been doing it every night since, in memory of all the souls that passed away before me. Like hers did barely a year ago.
