What's the method here to add an avatar? Can't for the life of me figure it out. Is it only available to administrators? I've seen a few with one. Thanks! |

Short answer: There isn't. When porting the design to HTML3 I kicked out all "fluff" in order to achieve max. speed on older Macs like e.g. a LC III. After all, the System 7 Today idea is to *keep using* old Macs and not hanging out in Discord channels talking about old computers from modern gear (no offense intended!) The old System 7 Today forum had a pre-selected bunch of machine icons users could choose. Since we took over (ported to modern forum software) the old forum, some users still have these icons with them. And then there's my co-admin with his love for a certain avatar ... ;-) If it'd be me, I'd kill them all. We keep optimizing our System 7 Mac to squeez every ounce of performance out of them. Why shouldn't we do the same with our forum software? But then I may be alone with my desire to keep this forum accessible to actual System 7 hardware ... ;-)

Yes @Bolkonskij but most peoples system 7 macs dont have enough ram to really adequately use netscape 4.8 or especially the bloat known as iCab which is why i wish this site functioned properly on netscape 2.0 including logging in Any Plans for that?

Yeah that makes sense. 68ks would get super bogged down with that I'd bet. I tried using IE 4 a while back to post here, and Netscape (3 I believe??) and couldn't, posts wouldn't submit. How high a browser version do I really need to post on here? I forget exactly what I used before though.

iCab 2.9.9 is my favorite for browsing the forum on my Mac IIci. (mind you, it only has a 68030 CPU ... it's not fast but it works!) I think I had tried Internet Explorer 4.5 and/or 5 and it worked too. Knezzen had some success with Netscape versions but I don't recall the details. Absolutely make sure to disable JavaScript before you do anything. After that, browsers get much more stable. There's also other stuff for improving performance to be found in our S7T Browser Central Knezzen and me are looking into a way to further streamline and improve the forum experience. But that is likely to be a few more months away.
