Wikipedia Reader is an unofficial client to access Wikipedia's API  to fetch encyclopedia articles and live search results and display them. It is written on and for System 6 and requires MacTCP.

Due to Wikipedia no longer serving its API over plaintext HTTP, a plaintext-to-TLS proxy is required to forward requests. Currently this defaults to using a free Cloudflare worker that I've setup, but the settings dialog in the application allows changing this to a private proxy if so desired (or perhaps some actual host on wikipedia.org if they ever support plaintext again).

No translation or conversion is done server-side. Wikipedia Reader accesses the raw Wikitext markup of an article through the Wikipedia API, parses the markup, converts UTF-8 to MacRoman, and displays the text. Basic formatting such as bold, italic, underline, and header sizes are supported, and clicking on a hyperlink to another article will jump to that article.

Download it from jcs.org

I'm on OS9 at the moment, it does throw a "out of buf space" error and quits after fetching an article. Can someone confirm it works on System 7?

I just downloaded it, ran it and fetched a few articles: it's working like a charm on Mac OS 8.1! 8)

So it doesn't work with Open Transport under MacOS 8.1? :(

I'm using it with OT, so MacTCP is not needed ;) have you downloaded it and tested it out; did it not work for you? :o

Eager to try this tonight in 7.6.1.  Incidentally, I like that when you leave the jcs.org page page open in a modern browser, it changes to display the classic After Dark flying toasters of old.  A very nice touch!

Looking at the source code, it seems like this could be converted to work with Crypto Ancienne. The HTTP request that would need to be modified is in https://amendhub.com/jcs/wikipedia/files/http.c .

@cballero - Still busy sucking the IA dry of XCMD stacks. Posting those links in the challenge was mean. ;)

@cballero - Actually, I test "any and all" of my "sucks" to check if they work on B-II and are - at least in theory - of some use to me.

That is why it takes up so much time to get done with it.

Same issue on the 8600 running 7.6.1.

The author just answered my e-mail and told me he's working on a 1.1 that will fix the "out of buf space" error as well as allowing command-clicking on a link to open it in a new window.

Cool! :)
