I just noticed this morning that there was an RSS feed for the forums. I plugged that into my FeedReader and it works like a champ. That is wonderful, thank you so much. You are doing and outstanding job with this website. |

I was using Sorbet Leopard on my PowerMac G5 and I came here in Safari. The RSS badge just showed up in address field. Clicking it take you to: <feed://system7today.com/forums/index.php?type=rss;action=.xml> I stuck that into NetNewsWire and poof magic a System 7 Today Forum feed showed up and it worked, scrapping the last day's feeds. Sorry that is not the most System 7 friendly solution. If I do recall correctly there was an OpenDoc add on for CyberDog so that it could be used as a feed reader. I am not sure I recall using RSS until OS X came out.

Nice! I totally forgot about the RSS functionality. Will look into a System 7 solution

I started hunting down RSS news readers after I read this post mid-November and I came up with two options for Classic Mac OS, and the first in my list works with 68k Macs and Mac OS 7.6.1: 1. Acuity . Mac OS 7.6.1 (SSL) https://www.alksoft.com/acuity.html 2. NewsStand . Mac OS 8.1 . http://www.getnewsstand.com/ Since I don't have a 68k Mac/OS up and running at the moment, but maybe NewsStand does run on 68k Macs as well? Both of these could also be compared as far as Mac compatibility and feature set

I'm a NewsStand user on OS9, so I did a quick check - unfortunately nativeChecker reports it as PowerPC only. I had written to the author asking for a System 7 compatible version when it came out. He said his RealBasic version used didn't support System 7 and was a reluctant to backport it to an earlier version at this point. ("I may look into it at a later time") So that leaves us with Acuity as an option for 68k. I've downloaded it and will give it a spin later on the IIci. According to sys requirements it shouldn't work at all (the IIci runs 7.1 + manual updates but we'll see what it does. Thanks for sharing!

Aw man The fact that I found a 68k RSS program in itself was a real exciting find I wasn't even expecting, feeling that such a little unicorn was akin to finding an EPUB reader for Classic Macs! ![]() Maybe another avenue might be to see if the authors of these little Classic Mac OS gems would be open to releasing their apps' source code (and potentially the tools they used as well) so other Mac programmers can add such compatibility in a derivative work? I really do hope that: 1) Acuity indeed can be made to work on earlier versions of System 7! 2) The authors of these programs could be persuaded to bless fellow Mac users with their app's source code, it could conceivably become a good candidate for a program that could span several (or all) of our beloved Classic Mac OSes ![]() I mention asking for the release the source code because this was exactly what one programmer from the MG was able to use for both the WebDAV app Goliath and MP3 player MPEGDEC before the hard drive pooped out (that in itself was an exciting development event as well as a saddening cautionary tale for all of us to always make backups of anything we work on.. so close for both apps and yet so far still!)

As often the case in those days, the author simply didn't have the means to test his software on older hardware and instead opted to issue much higher system requirements than really necessary. As you can see, Acuity runs perfectly fine on my Mac IIci. Very cool discovery @cballero, so now we can watch RSS feeds on our 68k Macs running System 7.1.

My bucket-list is usually pretty simple ![]() 'Can it run on 68k Macs?' And if it does, it makes the list ![]() So now I can cross-off an RSS web reader from my list of apps that peeps can use to get news feeds from their favorite websites. It's amazing to see how much we can still do with our old Macs if we look for it or if we have the ability to develop it, you know? ![]() I'm suprised m68k hasn't mentioned this one yet; I figured he'd be all over this one based on an older thread he responded to (but that doesn't mean he's not enjoying this reader already)
