@knezzen - thanks, but that sounds pretty overkill for converting a handful of m4a files. Code up that converter in RB like we talked about :-D

@cballero - thanks! I'm aware of online converters. But my (fun) quest is to find solution on Mac OS without relying on the modern corporate WWW. Hence my question ;-)

@wove - thank you, good suggestions! I don't use iTunes, even the few times I'm using OSX I do use SoundJam MP (for OSX). Sadly, no m4a support. I may look into Handbrake as a last resort, but then I'm really looking for a solution on Mac OS.

VLC would no doubt do the conversion as well. It remains available for early versions of OS X. I am not sure if OSX versions of VLC include the command line tools, but doing conversions from the command line even on very old systems can be surprisingly fast.

Of course a terminal on System 7 is something of an anathama for Classic Mac users. Which is my opinion is a great weakness in System 7. Perhaps one could use something along the lines of VirtualPC to install an old version of Ubuntu and use VLC from there to do the conversion. It would certainly provide bragging rights for using the most convoluted method possible. It would probably also test the limits of your patience.

Okay, maybe I found some guides? :)

(I assume that all of these links require a modern browser) ;)

https://happymacs.wordpress.com/2014/12/22/moving-current-library-to-mac-os-9-itunes-2-x/
https://happymacs.wordpress.com/2015/01/11/moving-itunes-12-x-library-to-itunes-2-0-4-part-2-converting-aac-to-mp3/

And besides these two guides, I also came across some very interesting chats on the file format plus a neat Mac OS 9 player (Knezzen shared a copy of the app in that chat, too!) :D
