After I was fed up with the placement of the @ key on the German keyboard layout in System 7 I figured out how to create a new improved layout that better fits my needs. I believe some of my fellow System 7ers might be interested in that too, so I wrote up this little piece to be found in the tutorials section on the page. Enjoy and have fun ResEditing ![]() http://system7today.com/create-your-own-keyboard-layout |

Thanks for highlighting this tip. I did try perfecting my preferred keyboard layout, but ultimately decided that it was already optimal. August Dvorak has done a good job! The Dvorak layout is not supplied with System 7, but you can grab one from OS9, or other 3rd parties. Unfortunately working with these keyboard layouts is not intuitive so I add some extra notes. The layout that is active is not listed in the System Suitcase. Change to another to reveal the one you were using. The layout can not be duplicated while in the suitcase. You have to move it to somewhere else. The original layout file can't be renamed. But a duplicate can. Weird! I got a bit confused in step 2 of the instructions ... "Click once on a resource, highlight the content in the new dialog and Get Info on it. Put in a new, unique name and new unique ID not used by other keyboard layouts, as seen in this screenshot. Repeat the same with the three remaining resources." 'Click once' doesn't do anything. Should be double click? 'Get Info'should be 'Get Resource Info'? I do not understand the unique name & Id bit. How do you know what is unique? There are a lot of Macs in the world to check! Does each resource have to be unique, or is it unique just for the layout?o

Quote from: ovalking Click once' doesn't do anything. Should be double click? Yes, absolutely correct. That is an oversight on my part, I'll make the appropiate changes. Thank you, ovalking! Quote from: ovalking I do not understand the unique name & Id bit. How do you know what is unique? There are a lot of Macs in the world to check! Does each resource have to be unique, or is it unique just for the layout? Good question! Luckily the "unique" only refers to the keyboard layouts on your Macintosh. So let's assume you have three keyboard layouts installed in your System - English (UK), German, Swedish. You can check the IDs of those three by opening them in ResEdit. And after that, you can assign one that they don't use. Or you do as the renegades in IT do and simply assign a ridiculously high resource ID (e.g. 99) assuming that no other layout is using it ;-) The whole idea is just to avoid a conflict for Mac OS by having two keyboard layouts with identical ID and/or name, which is a given if you copy an existing layout and alter it.
