Since i know some of you are tablet users, I'm looking for buying advice on a tablet. Rather than buying new cheapo-stuff that breaks quickly I like buying used premium price hardware for the same price. - I'm looking for a tablet to take with me on the road for reading PDFs and mp3 playback. - I don't want any telephone / comm stuff. - It should not force me to be online / ideally respect my privacy - Should be sturdy enough to survive a fall from a low height / not easily scratch - Battery life should be good, ideally battery is replacable Is there any such thing? Any model or line you could recommend? |

An iPad ? I still use an iPad 2 (!). only at home tho, but it's so convenient to do many kind of things like VNCing in other computers running in the house from the sofa, SSH, or watching movies... browsing... The battery is getting old tho. Will have to get a more recent one eventually. Thing with iPad is the aluminium case are easily bumped and damaged if falling, so a good protecting case is mandatory. And battery not replaceable , anyway not easily ...

I have been using a Lenovo Yoga Tab tablet for many years now and it has been a solid usable piece of hardware. An updated model is available. It runs Android, which you might not like. I have put the NextCloud client on it so I can send my data to my own server. I has a nice stand and works well for reading the news at breakfast, that is probably just a pleasant passed time for the retired. It has good speakers and sounds pretty good. The stand makes it pleasant for music and videos where always holding it would be a bother. My wife has a Kindle Fire tablet, that she uses just for reading and taking pictures. She is very happy with that. She knows it is uncouth to take pictures with a tablet, but she just does not care.

I am running B-II on a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7+ /w 256GB internal storage. Best solution for me, since it has full touchpad functionallity.

Update: Am about to switch to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8 Ultra. More RAM, more internal memory, built in modem card and ... true 14" high rez display!

personally I can't use Android as good as they are, I can't bear the OS! So I would go iPad. I mighty add; it really depends what you're used too as I've been on iphone for so long I'm not willing to change now. I had a work android and hated it so much I handed it back and refused to use it and hand out my personal number instead. my sister though adores her Samsung and hates Apple so all I would say is go with what you're comfortable with, stats mean little if you can't use it .

The gridlock is available Apps. So if you want to emulate a Mac, the Google App store has a great emulator app. AFAIK, for iOS you have to jail-break? your iPhone or iPad to make it work ![]() But yes, if you lean toward a particular OS, then that should be the starting point! That and secondly your budget of course!!

Thanks for the answers so far. I wonder - are there any viable alternatives to iOS and Android? Somebody possibly using one or knowing someone who does? Don't feel I like any of the two big camps too much.

Fedora Linux runs well on a Microsoft Surface Go. Linux is focused on desktop/laptops and is something of a chunky OS on a tablet, but it does run well. Much of the UI could really use a finer grain pointing device than provided by a fat finger.

@Neal_SE30 - total agreement on stock Android. That is why I always root, flush custom ROM and then put Arm-Debian on my systems. And @wove - if you put the right Linux on your tablet, its not "chunky" at all. You got to chose the correct distro (SuSE e.g. is always late in porting x86 stuff to Arm) and the correct desktop environment (one that doesn't require direct access to graphic's HW to run right). So stick with LXDE or the like (e.g. Gnome if you prefer solid but ugly) and stay away from KDE Plasma or Englightenment. I've been running Debian64 on tablets for many years now and nothing there "chunks".

A tablet is an excellent bridge device to be used in conjunction with older and obsolete systems. Much of what I need a modern internet for is realistically never going to fit nice with 90s OSes. I use the internet to pay bills, manage finances, read the news, lookup information, and go shopping can easily be done on a tablet. I can download reference and repair manuals for old hardware, and have it open and useful right next to the old broken item I am working on. You could have all the plant requirements open right beside the 8600 as you plan next years garden in ClarisWorks. It is simply bringing in another tool with different capabilities into the workflow. I think a tablet should have a big and beautiful screen with wide viewing angles. I like to keep lots of stuff stored locally, and for me I Iike at least 128GB of storage. I like to mark things up and take notes, so a stylus and palm rejection are really useful. It sounds very snobbish, but I think a new well built and capable tablet with cost at least $500. But a new good quality tablet will provide 6-8 years of solid use. A good quality tablet a few years old is still very usable and can found at a reasonable price.

I have to be 150% mobile and Intel devices - including Laptops - are just too energy hungry for that. They come with huge, often proprietary power supplies and drain their batteries within hours, if used actively. They are bulky, heavy and switching them to Linux is a hit & miss game many times. And all attempts on making them "touch ready" result - at least in my view - in a reduction of usability when it comes to the Desktop part. By utilizing Linux Deploy to put Debian on my tablet I get the best of both worlds: Full energy saving tablet functions if I stick with Android and a true Desktop system when I want it.

Intriguing 🤔 is that a Lintab or a tabex. Never thought about changing the os on a tablet. Yes android is so full of bloatware so it makes perfect sense to linex it.
