Ok, I’ll come clean. I haven’t used System 7 much lately. As far as the Classic Mac OS goes, I use mostly OS 9 in Classic mode on a couple of Macs each day, and 8.6 on the Power Computing clone I’m using to type this. 8.6 is very stable on this old clone, and the combination of a 300 Mhz G3 and 128 MB of RAM make it pretty snappy at that. Still, I was curious to see what the System 7 experience was like on this machine. When I setup this machine, I installed OS 7.6 from the original Power Computing install CD on the second hard drive. I hadn’t booted 7.6 in a long time so I decided to give it a go. So glad I did! The boot sequence positively flew by - significantly faster than 8.6. Every action is snappier including the launch times for applications I use often like WordPerfect. Even iCab chirps its tires a bit. And while I have a real soft spot for the Platinum UI, something about the color System 7 look is just that much cleaner, quicker and easier on the eyes. I’m really enjoying this, and I think I’ll be sticking to 7.6 for a while - coulda swore I heard a sigh of contentment from the Power Center Pro too, as if to say, “Now, that’s what I’m talkin’ about...” My desktop: http://images.macintosh.garden/2022/04/16/PCPDesktop.gifˇ |

I was already hovering over the "kick user" button when reading the first three lines. Just kidding, lovely post!! I think I've expressed before how much I love the "simple elegance" of the days of before Platinum. Not putting Platinum down, it has its own style and good aestethics, I just prefer the cleaner, older look - glad to hear I'm not the only one on here anymore? :-) The speed gains you noticed are in line with the benchmark tests that Dan Palka did almost 20 years ago. They still stand. The downside on using 7.6 vs. 8.6 / 9 for me used to be "No Classilla support" on 7.6. Given the web has moved on and Classilla dev stopped, I personally don't have many compelling reasons to install OS9 when I can have Mac OS 7.6. Well, an up-to-date Jabber client would be nice ... (hear that, Knezzen? ;-) ) Thanks for sharing your desktop and experience! Isn't it interesting how every user's desktop used to look so completely different from each other on Mac OS? I guess we should create a "Show your desktop" thread somewhere :-)

Hey, no bad mouthing of Platinum please. That would be akin to smack talking the Mona Lisa. It has an almost perfect GUI design and in my view beats any modern day Windoze tiled up nightmare by leaps and bounds.

I agree with all Bolkonskij said. 7.5/7.6 is the best looking OS of any I've seen. Main blocker for me not using it more is I can't read my HFS+ disks. In compromise I usually use 8.1 on my 8500 (which is every day). s

Hey, with Kaleidoscope on Mac OS 8.x and up I can switch to the System 7 finder GUI with a Kal scheme, and as from Mac OS 8.5 all the way up to Mac OS 9 Lives 9.2.3 version, I can also switch to the System 7 look-and-feel with an Appearance theme, either with or without the System 7 icons for max flexibility ![]() And with Kal or even Aaron, all system 7 versions can go Platinum too, so it's not even a contest because everyone wins! ![]() But why stop there? The number of Apple themes pales in comparison with the sheer number of skinnable schemes you can dress your OS Sevens to Nines with; in fact, over 4,000 of them from the Garden alone here ![]() https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/kaleidoscope (the MG needs a modern browser, right?) But if you want to browse and download them individually, you can from here: https://www.archive.hryjksn.com/kaleidoscope (also needs a modern web browser)

Agreed on the awesomeness of Kaleidoscope! You can make Mac OS basically look any way you want and that is a superb feature. Though I found the System 7 theme for OS9 to be not all that accurate, missing some stuff and I'm not starting about the speed even :-) The Mac Garden (even the current one) works with just about any System 7 browser, down to Netscape 2.02. You just don't get the layout to render correctly due to the lack of CSS support. But no need for https links unless you have a modern browser that forces you because it knows better than you what you want :-) http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/kaleidoscope Once the Garden redesign is finished, you'll be able to use the whole thing including forums and whatnot from an average System 7 Mac. @fogwraith is working very hard on that. A whole microcosm for our beloved machines! Talk about an outstanding perspective!

I just pilfered the *entire* Kaleidoscope theme archive from the wayback machine. And now I can make my 8.1 desktop look like a Star Trek console or a steam punk control board. That's the glory of Platinum combined with the freedom to freak - every now and then. ;-) Try that with a modern Windoze or MacOS system. Even Linux gets less and less customizable these days (as in: "I want to do stuff with it that was never meant to be done" custom).
