Recently ran into this article from Cheapskate which gives a good rundown on how to host a website from your home, running off a Raspberry Pi computer: http://cheapskatesguide.org/articles/raspberry-pi-website.html As we've been talking about reducing dependency on Big Tech, this sounds like a applicable solution for small to medium websites. Anyone of you running a website from home like in the old days? |

Running MacHTTP on an iBook G3 for several years, but have now lost my static WAN IP address. This makes it rather difficult to use, and no point me noting the address here!

The 80 hours of prep sounds painful. I love the fact that it's all doable and in principle, as long as you're putting something up for fun and all, that.. still sounds painful, lol ![]() But it's all part of learning new things I have learnt so much since I first started playing with computers and then web hosting and the numerous ways to setup websites, including good ol' HTML coding, which I made work on our very nice 68k Mac web browsers

Yes, the assumed 80 hours sound intimidating, but then it's really less work and a lot of learning on how the www works, isn't it? Definitely on my "To Do" list. Not sure how my provider will like that, as they tend to sell their own hosting packages.

Currently I have a site hosted on home.macintosh.garden, although it would be cool to have a mirror that is hosted locally for sure.

Warning: Fly in the ointment! Depending on your locallity running your own website from home may expose you to uncalculable legal and financial risks. Starting with basic access security, to cookie policy, data protection/privacy laws, all the way to managing/moderating user content (or failing to do so in a timely manner). In legal terms a server's location primarly determines what laws apply to the management of its content. Thus putting that box in your broom closet may come with a rats tail of obligations, if your broom stick e.g. calls Germany or France its "home". And especially in places like Germania, "Abmahnungen" mean that hordes of private lawyers make a good living by billing disobedient website owners *directly* for their (assumed) legal shortcomings, w/o so much as a day in court.

There should be clauses for non-commercial, private entities being safeguarded from such exclusionary tactics! And by extension, this means that any mom-and-pop shop that hires the kid down the street to put a web presence for them online could similarly face a legal assault based on perceived needs of bureaucratically-spawned outfits. It sounds more like corporate shake-downs of the little people trying to share their voice online. Doesn't net-neutrality cover individuals, families and non-business functions online? I mean, under such oppressive rules, this could shut-down simple blogs meant to provide a fun and possibly even a little profit to those unschooled in such web practices. Where did all this originate from? I'm sure the intent of such rules wasn't to scare those not well-versed in the ways of the web offline unless they follow precise protocols. Wow, a lawyer's dream right there!

At first it started out as a campaign by local do gooders, worried about consumer protection. The issue with "Abmahnungen" is indeed much older and akin to the American bounty hunter phenomenon. Its supposed to ensure consumer protection laws are being enforced w/o the need to burden the courts with countless law suits. It just all got out of hand once law firms could simply cruise the Internet for business, rather than having to drive around town looking for "sinners". Then the European Union jumped into the game and dumped one requirement after the other on top of it. All in the name of a better world of course.

Another instance where corporations and bureaucracies spoil things that should have been kept simple from the beginning, thus ruining the Internet for everyone

I finally worked out how to make my small self hosted website display fine on System 7 . Limited myself to iCab 2.9, as Explorer 4/5 or others just messes all the thing. If wanna try : http://galgot.hd.free.fr Now have to work on the gopher side, finally sorted out how to make NetPresenz display ASCII art correctly (yeah... took me month to find out it works like the Apple menu, ie everything is listed alphabetically/numerically , so numbering lines helps... Thks Adespoton for that :p ). Now, the big question... doing a self hosted site and a gopher is cool, but what to put in it ?
