Hello All,

I first used a Mac when I borrowed a buddy's Macintosh Plus (I think) to write a paper in law school in New Orleans in 1988. When I got my first job as an attorney in Sacramento in 1989 we were all provided SE/30's and my former classmates working in New York, Chicago, etc were envious (few attorneys had computers on their desks at that time and almost none had Macs).  Been with Apple ever since.

About 10 years ago in an act of random nostalgia I purchased an SE/30 had it recapped and have been working on it since.  I am currently running OS 7.6.1 and have an external monitor connected via a Radius Pivot card.  I also use a SCSI2SD and a ROM-inator.  I am back now in Louisiana after 30 years practicing law in California and am getting back into my old Macs.  In addition to a Powerbook G3 Lombard I own a Powerbook 5300C and a Powerbook 5300CE both of which I am trying to get running so if you have parts to sell and/or wisdom to impart on these models, please let me know.

I am so glad to see this site revived and plan to participate fully going forward.

Thank you.

Mike

Wecome Mike / Tugboat,

great to have you in our friendly small place of the internet! Thanks for sharing your background & personal Mac history. I recently uploaded a video to Cornica in which a Californian law firm was talking about using Macs in their office, taken ca. 1987. (watch it on the 5300 :) )

I've read that many law companies eventually switched to the Mac during the early 90's. So you were a real trend-setter in 1989 :-)

Do you happen to know the company mentioned in the above link?

What software did you use professionally on the Mac? Trapeze as well?

It's just a great opportunity for us to learn from what law professionals actually did use on their Macs back in the day.

Welcome Tugboat!  Proud 5300ce owner here - tried to get one on eBay for years but was never successful, then managed to land three of them within a month by dumb luck. Two are fully functional, and the other runs but is headless.  Happy to impart any experiences I've had with these machines.

Bolkonskij,

In the late 1980's very few attorneys had computers on their desks.  Most either wrote on legal paper or dictated and the word processing pool would turn it into text over night.  The primary reason my firm chose Macs was that it would make it easier for the dinosaurs to start using computers.  And it was.  The primary program we used was Microsoft Word 5 since word processing was the main thing we did.  When e-mail came along we used Quickmail.  I do not recall Trapeze being used but I was just a low level grunt at that point.  I am not familiar with the law firm you mention though I do remember Apple filming a piece at our firm showing how easily Macs could be integrated into a law firm.

Mac-Cellar,

Alas, my Powerbook 5300ce is also headless due to problems with the video cable.  I have a Powerbook 5300C or CS that I am trying to get to run but am having difficulty finding a working power supply board.  You wouldn't happen to have a spare?

Thank you.

Hmmm - I know I have a box of 5300 parts somewhere in my stash.  Not sure what is there anymore, but I will check and see.

Welcome and I hope your feet stay dry this stormy season. ;-)

The Mac and professional home user were always a match made in heaven. Yet for some odd reason the IBM PC still won out, even in that market segment. But at last all good things are here to stay and so I, too, use my vintage Mac mostly for book writing and story line plotting.

@68040 - the original Mac OS is a great creative environment. Would you like to show us in a seperated thread what tools you use and give us a short, general introduction on how you work?

Given that so many people seem to have trouble finding "useful tasks" for their old Macs, I think it'd be very interesting to hear from someone who's using it (professionally?).

EDIT: And he answered. Not hijack Tugboat's welcome thread, I've moved the posts to its own topic: http://system7today.com/forums/index.php?topic=3289.0
