Hi all, I'm Neal from the UK. I came across Macintosh Librarian on youtube and had a look through her webpage and saw it HTML 1 compliant and have a link to System 7, Result!!

So it took a while to load and register ( 3 attempts ) on my 33 year old 1989 Mac SE/30, finally harrah!!!! i'm in the forum, online running on Macos7.5.5 and internet explorer 4.01. now all i need to do is configure imap email and get it running as a DAW/Midi music studio then I'll have achieved everything I'd planned for the old Mac.  I do have a 6230 PPC on 8.1, a 6500/275 (no network card in that though) and a think a 2000/2001 G3 imac. My favorite though is without doubt my little b & W Se/30 I'm typing this on.

Hi Neal! It's really great to have you here, especially since you use your trusty old SE/30 to post! I'm using an equally old Mac IIci (1989), but mine has a Daystar PowerCache upgrade that helps a lot by taking it to 40 Mhz + better Cache.

I'd be interested in why the registration on our lovely little forum wouldn't work (3 failed attempts) ... care to send me a private message and tell me, please? Maybe there's something we can impove?

Yes, go ahead and try Mail drop for imap e-mail. I'm more the classic POP3 e-mail type-of-guy but @knezzen had tested it sucessfully on his SE/30 if I recall correctly.

Just make sure to allocate enough RAM. I've been testing some e-mail clients lately in order to create a big overview for S7T. I find that these e-mail clients are real suckers for RAM once the inbox grows, especially with today's big email sizes. So unless you practice a strict "zero inbox", I'd be assigning plenty of additional RAM to keep the crashes away :-)

P.S. Do your plans involve releasing new mod songs? :)

Thanks buddy. I pm’d re the login attempts.

I would love to have a daystar and the pds splitter. One day, they’re like gold dust!!! You’re a lucky man.

I’m not sure which email client to use, i download both. Do i really want my main email on it and go imap, i get so much spam as i’ve had my .mac address 20+ years so not sure my se/30 would cope with all the downloads. Thinking of following you with a separate email account and go pop3

I have the little guy stacked with the max 128mb with mode32 enabled, the one area i dont have to worry about. Any recommendations on email provider, i wax just thinking msn or yahoo.

Apologies i missed the p.s. that’s reading on a small screen for you.
I’m trying to get the midi/music side working and turn the old SE/30 into studio to make tracks on. I’ve not managed to get if all to work yet. What’s the saying A work in progress project:)

Welcome to our fun little System 7 Mac club on the web, Neal!! :D

From reminiscing to sharing all of our fun exploits, acquisitions and just keeping the Mac spirit alive, you'll find all sorts of neat projects and other mayhem to post and read here right from all of your Classic Macs! :)

And hopefully we can also help out with some of the neat little plans you have in mind for your SE/30, as well as hopefully inspire you to trick it out even more, like the MPEGDEC testing you've already attempted ;)

Thank you Cballero, happy to be here! It’s all good fun and experimental so count me in. Been tinkering for probably 7 years on and off (life getting in the way in between) but the kids have now moved out, i have a spare room (man cave), equipment (several macs) set up and running so up for challenge and get deeper into system 7, learn, do some projects too and generally geek out a bit :) I managed to get on a bbs earlier wow that was experience from the early 1980s I haven’t experienced in 35+ years when i was a kid. Ok so it crashed after 30 minutes but that’s nothing compared to dial up back in the day so was actually nostalgic 😆

Neal is in Da House! Great to have you here! :D

Looking forward hearing more about your DAW/Midi music studio setup quest on your SE/30. I've been heading in the same direction for a year, also for graphic use. Started out wanting to do it on Mac OS 9.2.2 on my Mac mini G4 -I'm typing this from now.
Next step is getting my SE 1/20 on-line, which I got a few months back. Only boots up from a SSW 6.0.8 floppy disk -currently.

I promise I'll introduce myself here, in the New Member Welcome thread -when the vin-tastic hardware it on-line ;)

but the kids have now moved out,

It is nice after the kids are gone you have space and time to play with your toys. And as a bonus the kids often leave their old cool toys behind for you to play with as well.

😆 thanks guys!
Yes the music studio side is definitely a work in progress, i’m sure it’s a configuration issue. So far i can play midi but having difficultly getting the synth sounds back into cubase lite on the se/30.

For reference, i have a macman midiman midi interface connected through serial to the mac from the modem port and back through the printer as a pass through. The Roland keyboard controller goes in to thr macman midi in, i’ve also Disabled appletalk so it doesn’t interfere.
The macman then feeds to a roland sc-88 general midi sound canvas though my mixer into a graphic equalizer into my amp.
I do also have my the se/30 setup for graphics/dtp. So have a wicom graphics tablet, scanner: quark, photoshop and page maker on it. It is still a work in progress and i still need to learn about about system 7 so i can get the most out of it. I could really do with a scsi to sd encase the 1gb hdd fails. As for toys 🧸 my kids are the sensible ones it was always me with the toys 😂

As for getting you SE online, it took my 2 years as I didn’t know what i was doing and that’s with a network card already installed. Getting the correct drivers and configuration was tricky as i needed a better tcp/ip software. Got from mac garden but what i really messed up with was a aui/tcp switch on the back of the card which i didn’t see. DOOH!!! Then finally harrah online! Err no, well kind of. It wouldn’t accept my modern fibre broadband. So i needed a twisted pair transceiver to convert aui to tcp and a cheap packet switching switchbox! So getting online wasn’t easy and even then it runs at about 56k modem speed lol

stop it, you're making me drool :P

Yeah my wife tells me the same. Every time we went buying presents for our daughter, she eventually found me stalled in the Star Wars or Lego Technic section :D
