I know this forum is generally Mac-centric, but I thought that people here might have some insight given it's still in the realm of vintage laptops. A few months back, I purchased an SD card to IDE adapter off of eBay to put in my ThinkPad 760ELD. Upon arrival, I found that the ThinkPad didn't recognize the SD card as a bootable device when I put it in the adapter. I shelved the project as we were about to move. Now, we have finished moving and I decided to dig it out again to see what I could figure out. Upon placing it in an external IDE caddy, it seems that the adapter doesn't show up at all. Does this mean I got a dud adapter or are there steps I'm missing to getting an SD card working with the adapter? Any help is, of course, appreciated. |

I used to run my entire IT life on Thinkpads, but dropped that and moved to Arm when IBM sold it out to Lenovo. The thing with Thinkpads was that they were IBM's flagship line. As such - and because of their quite extensive warranty policy - TP systems tended to be picky about the HW they accepted. In later models the BIOS contained a table with licensed ID numbers of extensions that would be accepted. If yours wasn't among them then you were just sh*t outta luck. They even did that with harddrives, which drove me and many others nuts. Not sure if that's the cause of your problem, but I'd check in the BIOS if your IDE adapter is visible there.

That's a good idea, I'll have to check that out. Although the fact that I put it in another system and it didn't show up there either doesn't fill me with much hope. Thanks!
